Final Fantasy Gaiden: Four Warriors or Light is making quite a buzz about the internet since it's reveal yesterday. The title looks to be a return to the classic-style RPG, which is something Square-Enix hasn't done in a number of years. They may have Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, but that's not entirely new. Final Fantasy Gaiden: Four Warriors or Light isn't a remake of a previous game, or an expansion upon one entry in the series...this is a brand-new installment in the Gaiden series, which has been long dormant. Can Square-Enix really craft a traditional RPG anymore?

"The title looks to be a return to the classic-style RPG"

No, a return to classic-style RPG would be Ultima, Wizardry and other western role-playing games.

"Can Square-Enix really craft a traditional RPG anymore?"

Not even the Enix side is capable of this anymore. This is why they were forced to outsourc Dragon Quest VIII and IX to Level 5; they are incapable of making a truly great game without needless narrative and pre rendered cutscenes.

I agree with Kirbylol... halfway. :P

Why are some people obsessed with proving that Japanese RPGs aren't "real" RPGs?

Is this some sort of radical discrimination, or what?

If you take control of a character (especially applied to MUTE characters) then you ARE playing the role of the hero of the story. The only difference I see is that in most jRPGs, the character has been made for you already.

I need some highlighting on the issue of why western RPGs are considered "real" RPGs. While jRPGs aren't.

To me, both are RPGs, each loyal to how each country plays them.

WRPGs = Exploration, character customization, morality and above all choice. These are all the building blocks of the pen and paper RPGs that they evolved from.

JRPGs = Narrative, story and plot driven, homogenization and simplicity, and the lack of choice. JRPGs remove what role-player games are in their attempt to be interactive movies instead of a game.

@Kirbylol

Too bad most WRPGs are simply terrible. The exploration usually consists of caves and tombs that look no different then any others, the customization always ends with your characters being an god, and the morality and choices always end up being black and white, with no shades of grey. The stories are more bland then any generic JRPG story, and the characters most of the time (Especially in Bestheda's games) have little to no personalities. Face it, WRPGs are just as tired a genre as you make JRPGs out to be.
