This is simply to show off how gorgeous the game looks in 720p, much like we showed you with Super Smash Bros. Brawl and other games.

Hmm... I think this game looks pretty anyway.

I guess I don't know much about graphics, but I can't really tell the difference.

Other than the anti-aliasing and the resolution obviously, there isnt much difference.

This is a beautiful game without any enhancements.

Maybe it is just me, but I feel that the 3rd SS that has the star bits flying around looks splendid. On my 42' screen, the curves and the light reflections are blur.

I can't really tell from that one screen, but the rest look incredible.

Galaxy 2 looks like it'll push the Wii further, so I'd love to see it in 720p.

*Sigh* The ONLY thing I want from my Wii, I wish so badly that it would diplay in at least 720p! I don't care if the current graphics stayed the same, I just want to get rid of the jaggies when play'd on my LCD TV.

This looks gorgeous! Why... WHY do you have to torture me like this? :(

impressive, while this doesn't make the game all that much more beautiful, the fact that there is anti aliasing does make a difference, wish Nintendo would release a firmware update allowing games to run at 720p, the original xbox could do it, and the wii has more ram that the original xbox, so I don't see why they cant do it

Well it's not technically 720p seeing the resolution of the pictures is 1280x960 pixels. It's 960p. You can put whatever resolution is available within the emulator.

The aspect ratio for those pictures is 4:3, the Wii only outputs 640x480, be it in widescreen 16:9, or 4:3. So you do not have a single extra pixel to make up the widescreen output, what you have instead is rectangular pixels (not streched), to fill the 16:9 area, but it's really the same resolution. You can see that on an emulator or a good monitor.

So widescreen on Wii is actually less defined than 4:3.

I had a geek attack, the shots looks gorgeous.

I hope Patcher is right and Nintendo does release a WiiHD down the road. I don't need a whole new GPU with Xbox 360 or PS3 level graphics, I would be perfectly fine if they stayed at the same level, but some anti aliasing would be much appreciated! It makes the picture just so much smoother and nicer to look at, it would really benefit to pull you into the experience.

Plus this shows that Wii games can be easily up scaled, which would be even better if Nintendo could just release a firmware update to add in 720p support. I'm sure the GPU could handle it as the original Xbox's could.

:O Have you seen the wave race ones!!? I so want a remake of that ASAP. I don't care if Wii Sports Resort has something like it. I want a new one with balance board support that looks as good as the cube one, but has better handling and maybe some online or something.

@TechNick

Not going to happen. The current Wii hardware just wouldn't be able to run the games it has now well if forced to work at a HD resolution.

These screens have anti-aliasing and texture filtering piled on them, and to be honest look no different to Mario Galaxy on my SD set. Playing SD games on a HD monitor is just asking for trouble.

-

Multiply the visuals in various effects laden Gamecube games like Starfox Adventures, Rogue Squadron and Twilight Princess by 3 or so to get what we should be seeing on the Wii.

Despite what we have been conditioned to believe, it can render anything the other consoles can at 480p.

That is what we should be demanding, resolution hardly means squat.

Higher resolution will not rid games of jaggies. If anything, it will expose more flaws that were never meant to be seen. Also something to note is that all Nintendo games have been made with low-resolution in mind, so they've never used high resolution textures because it would be a complete waste of space since there's no way to see them. Except with this emulator, which makes ugly textures uglier.
I say leave the games as they are.

honestly you "p" people with your 480p ,720p 1080p confuse the hell out of me. Mario galaxy is a gorgeous game , i can't really see the difference.

Most of 3rd parties games don't even use any kind of "lighting" , it makes a world of difference even in game like sports island 1! and the followup sports island 2.

The twilight princess/mariogalaxy/wsr/whatever engine make a tremendous job to provide different lighting source, it's what makes the game(s) gorgeous! not a a freaking "p!"

Well the "P" matters if you want to see it in anything larger than a monitor (exaggeration).

My point here is that some people would like to enjoy the art and the amazing job they did with the lighting on an HDTV.

I of course am not one of these people, but you are acting like an SD snob, so...

@Facepalm

Of course running the game in higher resolution will improve how it looks.

It's not the same as running it in 480p and up scaling it.

All the 3D objects will actually have smoother edges.

I see it all the time emulating N64 games etc.

The textures won't get any more detailed but the fact that all the 3D in the world is just sharper and cleaner will only help the overall look of the game.

While it's not a MAJOR life-changing difference (Galaxy was pretty on its own), there is enough of an upgrade that shows off the finer details of the smaller stuff really well. Not to mention the jaggie removal.

I'm getting tired of people who act like HD is some lame "gimmick" fad that will pass. Games like this deserve to be presented in their best possible format, and hi-def is an all around evolution similar to TVs going from black and white to color.

This does look good but as people were saying it isn't just the res its also the antialiasing and antistropic filtering etc which looks good.

What I want to know: is this system with these settings actually PLAYABLE on anybody's PC or do they just get screengrabs?

Because this would be a HUGE drain on almost any PC.

I've been playing around with the Dolphin emulator on my new PC (only testing games that I actually own), and let me tell you...it's very difficult to go back to the real Wii after seeing these games in 720p or higher. The difference (to my eyes) is astounding. It really makes me sad that the Wii isn't an HD capable machine. :(

Seriously, the Wii would look twice as good if it just output 720p. It still wouldn't look like the other two systems but it'd be a lot nicer on HDTVs.
