Looks like a hacker is going out of his way to squash anyone that is trying to download a ROM of Dragon Quest IX. Floating around on the internet is a ROM labeled “Dragon Quest IX JPN DSi Enhanced NDS iND”. If you're one of those that's grabbing ROMs left and right, this one could potentially brick your DS. The best part is, the ROM is now going around with various names...so if you're doing this risky activity to begin with, you could end up in a heap of trouble.

Nice, RMC.
I know, a hacker who's trying to stop the pirates?
"I'll teach all you guys who pirated Chinatown Wars! No more free games for you!"
I Agree with you, I guess RMC supports pirates
Now THIS is something I'd like to see the numbers for; how many bricked DSs are out there right now as a result of this?
Hey, if you're willing to do the crime and take the risk then you should assume any and all consequences of said risk.
I'm sorry but I'm unemployed right now (damn economy), and with a family extra spending money is very rare (plus I have a Wii, two DS's, and an Xbox 360). I only rent Wii games, I "pirate" my DS ones, and I buy/rent 360.
I mainly use my flashcard for emulator roms from NES, Gameboy, Sega, SNES, Imports, English Translations, etc.
Software Pirates will continue to steal games, and this little stunt will be quickly forgotten.
+1
I don't care about piracy at all, on either side, really. But conflict is always entertaining.
This!
@mick846
Good one.
But, seriouusly, pirates deserve this.
Nintendo and other companies should put out fake ROMs like this on purpose. It would be an interesting and different strategy to fighting piracy.
They would have to do some serious work to flood out everything else available though... still, they'd get some people.
Dude use cheapassgamer.com there are plenty of ways to get cheap DS games for free legally. Buy two get one free. Buy one get another half off. Look for bargin bin titles you would be surprised at how many good games there are.
Use a trade service.
I have over fifty DS games now and guess what most titles I didn't pay the full retail price for. Only two or three were used. Most games I either got for free or half price on sales from retail outlets.
Best buy has a gamers reward zone. Spend 150 dollars on games get a ten dollar gift certificate. You can often get dozens of games for 150 dollars that would be quite good if you use cheapassgamer.com
Companies back in the old days in Europe actually did do this to software pirates. They would cause a virus to become active if someone copied a piece of software and installed it on a pc. The virus hijacked the pc and rendered it unusable unless the user called and had the software company debug the pc after of course the pirate paid for the software and cost of pc repair which would have been a few hundred bucks.
Yet many pirates do this. Of course many of these titles the pirates claimed are all buggy to heck are because it is a beta build or because the pirating act causes the bugs to manifest. Pirates aren't the sharpest tools in the shed to begin with.
Or is pissed off at the pirates. Guess what in that time period a lot of pirates will have inoperable DSs and be wary of ever pirating again.
What makes you think the person hasn't already done this? As for the comments about the comments on the torrent a lot of torrent sites don't have commenting plus there would be a lot of frustration when the game comes to search for a non brickable torrent of the game.

DQ is serious buisness in Japan. I wish I could find this person and thank him...
...Even though it'd probably be a bad idea to even try to do that in the first place, now that I think about it.
Five straight posts dude??? Use the edit function.
I actually agree with you. Not all pirates are hackers, but those that are generally aren't dumb. They're find a way around this pretty quickly, and will just start pirating again. Also want to note that I'm not saying that pirates are dumb either.
@tootiredtothink
Geez, edit your posts. I swear if I was a mod I would ban you right now just for posting 5 TIMES in a row when we have an edit button.
no one here has ever downloaded an illegal MP3 or movie or TV show or anything!!
in other words,
"pot to kettle: you are black"
~Penny Arcade
i dont download mp3s or movies.i am against all forms of piracy
If an actual studio did this, they would have a lawsuit on their hands and they would most certainly lose if their software was actually breaking peoples' hardware. I'll laugh when some better hacker breaks into his computer and bricks it. If you guys seriously think this person is trying to give people the message that they need to buy games...you are so sadly mistaken. He probable pirates himself...he just wants to cause problems for other people...because he can.
Pirates Stunt Industrial Growth.
There are people who don't download illegal software for free.
The reason its possible for DS games(or PC software) is that they are code that is run. Music and movies however aren't so you need an exploit in a media player to make a virus, which wouldn't last long.
Not necessarily. Depending on the exploit it could take a long time before it would be discovered and well certain devices aren't upgradeable.
That said, I'm glad I got to download games, that way I can play them. If I had to pay for the games I would play... i wouldn't even have a NDS since having a game system for one game or two is barely worth it. Games are way too expensive to afford them. Besides, most good games never make their way to my country.
Bunch of well located rich whiners...
They really aren't that expensive. I think they are the best value next to downloadable games.
Then again.....Why should I have to pay for a game I want to play? Why should people be compensated for the work they do? I'm entitled to play any game I want. If they wanted to sell the game to me, they should have priced it to exactly what I think it's worth. SMH
If you pirate games, you pirate games. Just don't complain about games being too expensive because it's just an excuse. No one wants to hear how you justify the fact that you just want games to be free.
lol at you calling people whiners when you say you can't afford games because they're too expensive.
I hope more pirates take this way to kill all the R4 out there muahahaha
bleecchhh!
all the 'hardcorez' just steal wii and ds games and screw us normal people over.
sure i would rather spend the money I spend on games on something else and get games for free, but I stopped believing in santa a long time ago and you are totally screwing lots of people over to steal.
@kiwisoup
I see your point but as Nintendo fans you can't deny that what games get greenlit depend on what sells, and almost all pirates are core players so when sales of grand theft auto, conduit, dragon quest are down because of pirating, we get Imagine Baby Vet because of all the pirates.
It's not like TV and music will say 'well, Panasonic dvd player owners only seem to watch shows like 'Puppy Haven'" and 'ipod listeners only want to hear lullaby music' because of downloads but that's what happens to us.
Pirates: "DOWNLOAD!!!!!1"
Pirates: "Blarg! All our systems got bricked halfway through the games we pirated!"
Nintendo: "Dumbasses."
I bet they could be sued for making malicious software.
And if the hardware breaks, how is it good for Nintendo? People who pirate also buy games, so if they don't have a DS, how would they get them?
