July 24, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general

Yesterday, Mark Rein made some statements concerning the Wii, and they caused quite an uproar. Today he makes some more comments to try and smooth things over.

“The kind of games we make just would not work well on Wii. With our high-end engine, making a game work on Wii would spread our resources too thin and cause us to lose focus. Hardcore games have been hit or miss on Wii. Some have done well, some have not and we would not expect Gears or any of our games to sell well on the system. Games like Madden are great, especially since the developer designed a user interface specifically for Wii, but again, doing something like that would take up resources we are using to make other titles. Again, I never said making games for Wii was a waste. There are some great games for it, but it’s just not for us.” - Mark Rein

Just for giggles, let's look at what Mark Rein said about Madden just yesterday...

“(on third parties making core games for Wii) And they've been huge financial flops... It's just not where the market is. Look at EA. Do you see the same Madden game on Wii? Of course not – it's a dumbed down game.”

Hmm...that sounds a bit different from the statement he made today! Which one are we to believe?

The only thing I'm to believe is the guy is an opportunistic douche who must have realized how bridge-burning and mean-spirited his lame baseless comments were and now he is attempting lamely to cover his rear.

Why would he care what Nintendo fans think?

It's more that likely somebody at EA made an angry phone call asking him to stop undermining their Wii projects, since they're making fat cash on the platform. EA's an Unreal Engine customer, and the customer is always right.

Just choose an opinion and stick to it, dammit. I'd prefer you just hate something rather than stupidly try to make it seem like you didn't mean what you said, then go back to hating it again.

Looks like someone put the reigns on Rein! Get it?! lololololololol....-_-

Anyways, it looks like classic PR whiplash. If he would just stick to his guns, I would respectfully and understandably disagree. However, flip-flopping like this just makes you look like a corporate tool.

Exactly!

"I hate dogs, they always bark."

"One good thing about dogs is how they bark, I love that."

"Goshdarned barking dogs!"

"While dogs are not for me, at least they do bark, which is a good thing."

"We will never have a dog because they bark."

"Maybe someday, who knows, we will have a dog. They do bark, after all."

As someone who only games on Wii and PC this generation, I still have no problem with Rein's statements. They may be a bit skewed, but then whose opinions aren't. He hasn't said anything that isn't true, and folks need to accept that. There are always two sides to every coin (unless you're Rosencrantz and Guildenstern), and statements like his are always hard to swallow for one-console-owning gamers. I'd much rather see companies follow the lead of Epic and pour their resources into making one or two great games, rather than spreading themselves thin in order to make a fast buck (2K).

Rein's commentary is a lot like "Gears of War": It looks sound and capable, but it's in reality shaky, hazy, and sense-dulling; trying to decipher it leads only to running head-first into walls, since your brain has gone numb and you can't control a goddamned thing.

Last gen, games like Madden and GTA were considered games for the 'average' gamers.

You might be asking "what is an average gamer?". Quite simple, it was one of the words we used to describe people who were new to gaming, or didn't take it serious. It wasn't until this gen when gaming companies had to explain away the Wii success, that we see the terms "casual" and "hardcore" butchered.

Can people stop being outraged and just let a guy have his opinion? Games PR is all about pandering and wording every statement carefully as to not step on any toes. It's sickening. Every statement is stripped of any honesty and gamers just eat it up. I'd like it if more often than not someone could just spout out an honest opinion and not be pressured by fans or corporate into changing it the next day.

@GeekyDad

"He hasn't said anything that isn't true,"

He implied more than once that "hardcore" games can't succeed on the Wii, when all we have gotten were shovelware and niche titles that were destined to sell poorly. He's using the same old fallacy "3rd Parties can't compete with Nintendo on their consoles".

"Can people stop being outraged and just let a guy have his opinion? "

He's a major person from Epic. He's not entitled to state his "opinion"; stating your opinion, when it pisses off potential customers, tends to get the execs upset, and when they upset you get upset.

I have to agree with you. Wii owners cry for hardcore games, yet they just refuse to buy them when 3rd party developers continue to try to give them what they want: "hardcore" titles. Hypocrisy all around if you ask me.

In short, I agree with Mark Rein when he says 3rd party titles flop because Wii owners cry for "hardcore" titles but all they want are 1st party titles which to me a bunch of them are not that great. Yes, I am looking at you Galaxy.

He didn't take back what he said.. cause he never said the game was bad.

As you can see from his statement he talks in a very blunt way. Saying that Madden for Wii is a dumbed down version means that it's an inferior version of its HD counterparts.

Yeah, but do you really think any games that sold poorly on the Wii would sell well on the 360? How about games that sold poorly on the 360 that would sell more on the Wii? I would argue that there are mounds more of the latter and maybe one of the former (there has to be one). If these games couldn't sell on any console, then they are pretty much niche.

@Lyude77

I wouldn't stick to that argument much tough.. I mean, it's imposible that any Wii game that gets ported to 360 or PS3 would even be the same game.

Any Wii game that gets ported to an HD console will be short on content and other aspects, so if 360/PS3 owners weight in comparison to a similar game of the same genre I think they will always go with their system's version.

I just think it's innacurate to use that analogy.

say hello to Tiger woods 10 and NHL 2K 10. Both have everything the 360/ps3 versions have along with motion plus on top of that. Which in my opnion makes both of them better than their HD counterparts.

It's not perfect, but I still think it's ok. I mean, one example people use of good core games failing is Okami, and it failed on the PS2. Mad World hasn't done well on the Wii just like God Hand did poorly on the PS2. They aren't exactly the same game, yes, but they are very compareable. There's nothing stopping Wii developers from putting more effort into their games to make them games that even 360 core gamers would appreciate, that's my main point. If it wouldn't sell under normal conditions on a more popular system like the PS2 or a guessed core gamer heavy system like the 360, I just don't see why it should do extremely well on the Wii.

But yeah, that's just my opinion.

Yeah, the man disappoints me. The man clearly doesn't know jack about the Wii, for every Madden there is a unmatched Wii version of Tiger Woods that has the best sales.

Epic Games are overrated, they are not exactly Crytek now are they? The Wii has proven that it can use the same effects that HD consoles can (and dare I say even Gamecube titles did!), I consider this man to be backing out of a challenge.

Point at MadWorld for a core game failing all you want, all I know is...

God Hand (PS2) LTD sales = 70,000
MadWorld (Wii) LTD sales = 250,000 and counting, and didn't even release in Germany and Japan.

The Conduit made 71,913 sales in it's first week alone.

The only so-called "hardcore" Wii games that failed were Rail Shooters, (not that many people are into them) badly advertised games like Deadly Creatures, and stuff that's just a bit too bloody for most peoples taste like Madworld.

The Conduit was brilliantly advertised, and was in no way half-assed, so it's selling incredibly well.
