A few snippets of info from the Iwata Asks feature on Monster Hunter 3...
- Capmp worked extra hard on making the graphics in MH3 the best on Wii
- Nintendo's designers were very impressed with the graphics, so much so that the Zelda team really felt the pressure after seeing Capcom's work
- Tsujimoto said the Wiimote didn't have enough buttons, and the dev team took right up until the TGS showing to map out the controls
- the idea of motion control was tossed out due to the immense amount of hours players spend with this game
- Capcom worked with Nintendo to design the Classic Controller Pro

YES, that means that the zelda team will try to make the next zelda better looking than MH3 and with Motion Plus!!!!!
July 31, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Alright!
TEAMWORK! I hope to see the Classic Pro here.
In my opinion, the Classic Controller should have been packaged with the Wii from the very start, instead of us paying more for them.
Maybe the Zelda team will try to outdo the MH3 team. Now I REALLY wanna see how great Zelda will turn out!
Do we still have to pay to play when it's released outside Japan?

Very interesting. If the Zelda team is up to the challenge, Zelda wii is going to be beautiful.

Disagree with that. So they're saying Motion controls only work for short play time? Resort players prob. play for a long period of time.

In terms of sheer graphics power, I think MH3 looks amazing, way better than Twilight Princess. However, Twilight Princess had great art direction, so I hope this game does as well.

Really? I still think that Super Mario Galaxy is the best looking game on the Wii.
I always assumed that the Zelda team could imitate the crispness pretty well (although not exactly due to Zelda worlds being so huge).
EDIT: Maybe it's just the lighting I don't like too much in MH3. It's beautiful but I just don't like the lighting.

Yeah I agree. Super Mario galaxy looks much nicer to me than MH3. Texture work in MH3 is pretty last gen and not too crisp.

No you won't. No console MH released in the West had P2P, only in Japan they did. Plus if they're trying to make the series big over here, why make it P2P? Don't make stuff up.

well, if you're comparing it to TP's Respective generation, it was one of the Best looking, but judging from your comment you are comparing it to the current gen games.....:/..

So that's how this came up. ^_^
And seriously, regardless of how the graphics look from either MH3 or TP, I simply just want to play them both in 'balance' and not just for looks alone.

You can fuss all you want we will be Paying and playing no doubt about that. Capcom would be foolish to release the game here without some kind of on going fee.
The first game wasn't pay to play because it wasn't that popular. Now that Capcom has a very nice little nest egg they are going to wring it for all it's got.

Um, Iwata is the one comparing TP to MH3. As though MH3 suddenly got so good that it made the Zelda team say "Oh noes we've been beaten." Which is dumb because TP was not the pinacle of Nintendo's graphical efforts in the past 3 years or whatever.
But anyway, MH3 has teardrop shadows. *sigh* =(

So there are no motion controls whatsoever? Not even to swing a weapon? That sucks majorly. I'm so tired of Wii games that either have poorly implemented motion control or no motion control whatsoever. We have WiiMotion Plus now, I expect to see games with using motion controls smartly now. I'm honestly losing interest in this game, now that I learned there are zero motion controls...

I hope Nintendo is bending over for Capcom for getting their Japanese-crazy fever.

The textures look pretty blurry in screens, but they look pretty good when you're actually playing it.
The game's easily one of the best looking games on Wii, so if the next Zelda beats them on a technical level, it'll look great. They're a talented bunch when it comes to art so that shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah that's another thing. While it looks somewhat nice from the camera view if you zoom in closer you can see the textures are not that great looking.

Am I the only one that sees the graphics on Monster Hunter 3 to just be... well ok?
Dead space extraction, RE:DC, silent hill and conduit look better graphic wise IMO

I hope this come out soon in NA and I also looking forward to the new controller!

@jasonmaivia
It wasn't confirmed (damn, the game wasn't confirmed outside Japan yet), but, historically, it isn't (the only online MH launched in NA is MH1, and it was p&p in Japan and free in America; and considering how both Capcom and Nintendo want to make the game big in the West, it'll probably be free).

Why do people read into it the wrong way?
The Zelda team never felt beaten in the graphics department, Christ. I don't recall them building up anything from the ground up for the Wii that's a core title.
They just are looking at the competition* in admiration and friendly rivalry which benefits all of us in the long-run.

Wow thats interesting that Capcom helped design the Classic Controller Pro. I guess they know a lot when it comes to classic game controllers because of their history with fighting games.

"In my opinion, the Classic Controller should have been packaged with the Wii from the very start"
Nintendo already commented on why they didn't do so. It would have just led to 3rd parties not even trying with Motion controls (which oddly enough, happened to an extent anyway).

Personally this is bad news if Nintendo's own Zelda team was THAT impressed with MH3's graphics.
...The game doesn't look THAT good. Plenty of later Xbox games, Super Mario Galaxy, and a few of the graphical aspects the Conduit got right look noticeably better than MH3.

Agreed. MH3 looks on par with Twilight Princess, IMO. And that was a Gamecube game. Surely Nintendo have surpassed that in terms of graphics, just as they did with Galaxy.

Monster hunter looks nice becase of the layout of the areas. for example the first god of war was praised for good looks becase alot of time was spent on each room. the rooms felt more "alive" i guess you could say.
graphics go deeper then polygons and textures. the textured in monster hunter are ok i think but when you put the foliege, the monsters, the players, the wepons, and the animations all together you have one hell of a good looking game i think.
yes the shadows are not great and there is probly not dynamic lighing from the looks of it but MH3 dosnt need anyof that : P. thats like complaining about the lack of physics and rag doll in the game, in the end its all irrelivent to the game play, thus a wastw of time that could be spent on another monster. not that i would hate some good lighting, just i dont see a reason to QQ over it.
also PRO TIP: they never said zelda team was "THAT" impressed and they were compairing it to the game in proggress, not TP.
and it would be a huge mistake to make it pay to play. they have a nice game worth paying for but the US and UK dosnt know its worth it yet. just the few of us that played the first one back when you could. they have something to prove i think to the rest of the US/UK communities befor they can take money from you every month.
and as long as im complaining ITT: ppl that pretend they played MH before or have seen the new one in person.

What? The games still aren't that popular in the West, so why would they add P2P? The series is only semi-popular over here. They can afford to add P2P in Japan because the game is so huge over there. In the West? Nope. They said they want the game bigger in the West, how would they accomplish that with P2P?
Plus, mods on the Capcom forums said Capcom aren't planning on adding P2P for the Western release anyway.

Maybe/maybe not, but hey, if it pushes them to come up with a better product, then it's the consumer who benefits yes?

Ok so basically they were limited by the hardware, and by the controller. Well, that's not really good news.
What they're (Iwata included) saying is that motion controls prevent long play session. Well that means that the Wii was made for short playing session, so good bye adventure games and RPGs ? Thank you Nintendo.
And Capcom working on the controller for their game is another stupid idea. Now the controller is adapted to MH's gameplay and that's it. Guess that's why we don't have analog L and R buttons anymore.

It is one of the most technically and artistically advanced games of the last generation. I dare you to imagine the situation if it didn't come out so late.
-
Monster Hunter looks good and that is pretty much it, it doesn't have half of the technology Twilight Princess had.
My assumption is that Iwata is completely oblivious to western efforts like The Conduit, and in fact sees Monster Hunter as the only game that comes close to anything Nintendo have ever made. They both have a fantasy setting, which is another weak reason for comparison...

true, i suspect they just had arm agrrevating waggle controls too,
you know the arm jerkers,
wii sports resort has some seemless controls wouldn't mind zelda being the same as the sword sections

I think Iwata's just being nice. MH3 does look good, but not that good.
For example, the shadows are non-existent, and what's there are pre-baked. Same with the lighting.
MH3 has a very high polygon count, but that's about it, and maybe some bloom.
The ugly flat water screams lazy since the Gamecube can render water better than that. Plus, using environment map bump mapping is FREE on the GC, but Capcom didn't use it for MH3. There's no hint of bump maps of any kind with some very bare bones material shaders. Resident Evil 4 pushes shaders and polygon better than MH3 on Gamecube.
Great art, but hardly pushing the Wii.
