August 9, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Nintendo in general

“As for the media briefing at E3, of course we had many internal discussions after that. Honestly speaking, none of us at Nintendo thought that our presentation at E3 was as good as it could have been. It is apparent that we could not fully convey the charm of our products. In the past, Wii Sports and Wii Fit were naturally able to convey their appeal on stage since it was something no one had ever seen or imagined before. People seemed to capture the appeal of Wii Sports instantly and although there was some initial confusion with Wii Fit, its appeal did get through to the audience afterwards. This year, however, with the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, four people lined up with Wii Remotes was not a scene that no one had ever seen. Those who actually had the chance to play understood how the game would change with four people playing simultaneously, but we could not address that fun sentiment at the media briefing. Now we strongly feel that we need to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products’ appeal better at E3 in these times where more people are watching it online via web cast not only in the U.S. but all around the world, than the number of audience who actually watch it in the theatre. In that sense, we learned many lessons from this year’s E3 show. After the media briefing, we had a domestic trade briefing in Japan. There we disclosed the black Wii console and red Nintendo DSi, which made a big buzz among game fans. It is also an important lesson for next year.” - Satoru Iwata

I thought this year was pretty good, but it seemed absolutely amazing after last year's show. At least Nintendo is going to continue to strive for a show that is better every year. Let's move as far away from E3 2008 as possible!

I was pretty pleased with this E3, though 1/4 or even 1/2 of Nintendo's conference was very boring. Of course, the rest of it was packed with awesome reveals like Golden Sun, Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2, which is why I think it was a pretty good one.

Well since Nintendo got a Smaller stage this year, some had already assumed for a small showing. Then again last year they had a big stage and well....

But I was a little disappointed this year watching their showing....idk, I was expecting more for a redeeming show from last year.

What I didn't like about this years nintendo's E3 is that they have spent most of their time about sales and other boring stuff, the beginning with NSMBW was okay not to mention I was like "wut? 4D?" then we hear some more boring stuff then Golden Sun DS, that was exciting to hear but again more boring stuff, I was nearly half asleep until we got to Mario Galaxy 2 and I was like "awesome! now we're on to the interesting stuff!" but then again we get some more boring stuff until reggie started talking about "we've been reading our blogs" or something like that and then the awesome footage of Metroid Other M which was mind-blowing, then at all sudden the show finnished and I was "already?!", for an hour of presentation they spent most of their time talking about things we already know or just not interesting IMO, next year they better remove all the boring stuff and add the awesome factor.

I think they did better this year. I want more games packed in. Not just from nintendo, though. They need to start making deals with 3rd parties and showcase their games. More montage videos like 06, and more galaxy 2 and M:OM moments of pure awsomeness.

Papa Miyamoto comes out with Hylian Sword and Shield at next year E3 just like he did with Twilight Princess back in the glorious Nintendo 2004 E3 presentation.

"But before you go, we have one more world for Nintendo GameCube...!"

Everyone loved it, it's not to say Miyamoto hasn't done something as cool as that. I thought his Wii Orchestral (Music) back in 2006 was magnificent.

Nintendo's E3 went down-hill after 2007 IMHO.

Next year, I want a two hour press conference, just like Microsoft's press conference this year.

I want two hours of pure awesomeness! No boring stuff, a lot of new game announcements about things we actually care about, and a new online system!

And no talk of sales they have made. They took a step forward by not having sales graphs and crap up there, but they still talked about how "NPD SAIZ WE PWN'Z TEH OTHER GAIZ".

But their showing this year was better than last year.

EDIT: OH, and we need Miyamoto up there talking about Zelda, not a Wii _____ we wouldn't care about.

we dont need to hear about sales stuff period. send out a press release to the media beforehand if you really want everyone to know. no need then to speak of it at the show. everyone already knows.

but anyway it seems this comment is directed almost entirely upon nsmbwii poor "stage perforance". as he said, the world was watching, and surely not many people thought four pr goobers shaking the controller while playing a mario sidescroller to be innovative. certainly not a wow moment.

but i dont really understand how else they could have showed nsmbwii. less idiots maybe?

Well, really, the last few years Nintendo never had a good E3. There's on excuse in that, and their conference in October certainly couldn't count as one.

An official presentation of all new games, the current lineup, and what future holds with the correct ammount of time on each topic should have been there on first place, even if they don't want to reveal too much of new stuff. Really, just watch Sony's E3 conference. It was pretty much a perfect presentation.

Anyway, let's wait for October.

No Retro game, no Factor5 game, only flagship game with any third party involved being Metroid Other M, all holiday games looking like cheap jobs, WiiWare forgotten, no change in strategy, and no big new IP. I love Zelda, but I don't think it was the biggest problem with this year's E3. It actually (maybe) didn't lack a Wii___ game, as the vitality sensor game will probably sport the Wii___ IP.

@WiiFolder
So... "2D Mario game for Wii! ... Golden Sun DS! ... Metroid Other M!"?
That'd be a kickass conference.

Well its good to hear that the people at Nintendo think they can do better next year. Because let's face it, mostly Nintendo just buries its head in the sand, and ignores things like this. This past E3 was good, but to tell you the truth it wasn't really Nintendo's fault for it not having enough energy, because the jaded gaming media in that room, just didn't want to cheer for much of anything.

It wasn't until the end, when Nintendo rolled out the last few huge announcement that they got any major cheers. They didn't even make a peep when NSMB kicked off the show. Any other year, and that would of got a huge applause. So it was like the gaming press was just daring Nintendo to make them applaud!

I like this because I completely agree with Iwata. This year was good, but could have been a lot better.

it was really exciting up to the EPIC Golden Sun announcement, but right after that it got boring. instead of talking about Women's Murder Club and Style Savy, they could have talked about Sin and Punishment, and shown the new Zelda Spirit tracks trailer (not just a couple of words and nothing else)

Iwata's part with the Wii Vitality sensor was just plain boring because he described it, but it would have been MUCH better if he actually showed what it could do.

other than that, it was a solid 8/10 conference.

Nintendo announced a TON of amazing titles this year that they didn't even mention in the conference. They would've had a far more effective presentation (to us) had they talked about Monado, Glory of Heracles, Endless Ocean 2, or the number of other core titles that were shown off at the booth, yet snubbed at the conference.

I don't really know what to say.

Iwata said this last year too. They keep talking about how they can improve, yet they talk very small baby steps into getting there.

It's not that hard to figure out that a Women's Murder Club game trailer isn't going wow even women themselves.

With all the awesome 3rd party games coming out for the Wii, they should have put some more focus on that. I mean come on, have the developers of Red Steel 2 show us how awesome the game is, same for Silent Hill or Final Fantasy. Third parties are picking it up now and they should shown more of that. SHOW all the core support from third parties Wii is getting this year into next. That would've made it much better.

You guys remember that E3 and such is mostly tailored to journalists, right?

Anyhoo Nintendo played it very safe this year, only announcing games in already established franchises for the most part(seriously, ANOTHER Metroid title?!). I blame it on the fact that Wii Music didn't sell systems so they had to shell out something to please the fans while they tried to figure out how to make the next system seller.

Well considering a lot of the press at the conference are gaming journalists (people from print mags, big websites, blogs etc.), I find it ironic that you're saying it's catering to journalists when many of those journalists are gamers like us.

People who don't play games at all are very likely in the minority in that crowd.

Everybody knows that E3 was originally just a tradeshow, but it soon became more than that and Nintendo was a part of it.

Nintendo's E3 was indeed sucky.

Too much Mario, completely ignoring everything else.
Too many pointless collaborations.
Too many safe bets and 'Wii' franchise games.
Pointless Vitality Sensor showing, with no product shown.
Not enough focus on Nintendo exclusives like Golden Sun, Sin & Punishment, Monada and the like, where is the love?

I'd really like to see them not focus on any gadgets next year, and just working on putting out good games.

I find it funny that Cammie was so goofy last year, and then so stiff and serious this year. They do know there's such a thing as a "happy medium", right?

I thought their content was probably one of the strongest E3's they've had in years.

The presentation of said content, however, was awful. When you have (admittedly extremely whiny) gamers complaining about Super Mario Galaxy 2, a new 2D Mario and a new Metroid, you know you goofed somewhere.
NSMB Wii's unveiling in particular was botched by Cammy pretty badly.

But let's be honest. Nintendo had good stuff to show just did not show it right. They majority of the reporters aren't there to hear sales history. They're there to see the big games Nintendo has coming out.

Microsoft and Sony realized that. Why can't Nintendo? It's like they think their sales history are the only thing that makes them notable.

A hell of a lot better than that drumming s*** they pulled in 2008.

Honestly, I thought this showing was better than 2008, and that's at least showing they are trying to give a crap. Boring conference was boring, but they at least showed worthwhile games.

The problem, however, were that most of them were expected and not a whole lot of new to any of them except 4 player in NSMB and Other M's existence.

@WiiFolder

Until I see something other than a statement with Miyamoto saying "please wait", it's not real to me.

Where's Kirby? Why is that still on release lists? Pikmin 3 could almost be a Nintendo Duke Nukem.

It may come out, I am not doubting that, but I don't think it's being worked on right now at all. Or if it is, it's in the planning stages still and nothing worth noting at all.

Let me REMIND YOU- Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced and said it was being worked on and would have wifi and they didn't even have a team, a director, a game, or knowledge if they could successfully get it online. They had none of this. They announced it AND THEN asked Sakurai if he could make it, and to get himself a team to make the game.

So just because Nintendo announces something, you can't assume it's actually there or being worked on yet.

I can't wait for E3 2010 to come and we get a piece of artwork or a logo and we're told to accept that as confirmation that it's still being worked on.

I hope you're having fun playing Project H.A.M.M.E.R., WiiFolder.

Face it, Pikmin 3 was announced in 2008 to shut people up.

But hey, if we see Pikmin 3, by all means, I'll apologize. But as of right now, I call shennanigans.
