Check out this bit of censorship that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption received while being squeezed into the Metroid Prime Trilogy. I think this is just a bit silly...

BUT NINTENDO HAS CORE FRANCHISES THAT AREN'T KIDDIE, WHY IS IT FAIR FOR NINTENDO GAMES TO HAVE A KIDDIE STIGMA?
This is why, goddamn the dumbest censoring I've seen this generation.
I can't imagine what they would do with Mother 3.

This is pretty surprising.
I like my games squeaky clean in the language department, so I'm not gonna complain.

Oh wow.
And Nintendo wants to be taken seriously. So much so that they remove the word DAMN from this.
This is the next gen variation of when they removed "one HELL of a guy!" and changed it to "one HECK of a guy!" in the DK Rap in Melee. It was okay for N64/E rated, but when it becomes a T game, s***. None of that.
What the hell, Nintendo? Seriously?
You have no shame in flaunting yourselves as a laughing stock.

lol Son of a female dog! Damn is the tamest curse word. Censoring it is just dumb. If Nintendo wants to break the kiddie stigma, they've got to let their franchises mature a bit. Saying "damn" in that moment was for effect, not to offend anyone and it was the only instance of a curse word in the whole game.
August 30, 2009 at 6:23 pm
I was actually surprised when he said it in the original. It seemed so mature for Nintendo
August 30, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Who gives a NO!
GET IT?
But srsly, I dont care, I'm enjoying these games for the first time too much to care about the things they take out.
Especially if they don't take away from the overall experience.

It's not that big of a deal to me personally. . .but still mighty ridiculous.
August 30, 2009 at 6:27 pm
So I'm curious, who said Nintendo had any part in the removal? It could have been Retro Studios you know...Maybe they felt it didn't fit? It went against their original vision? Maybe Nintendo to be "taken more seriously" pushed Retro in to adding it in the first place!
Also, beyond the (extremely) slight engine upgrades to MP3 in the Trilogy, if a single word being changed is that frustrating to you, then play the original version you most likely have.

People still got mad at George Lucas for following that same philosophy.
People get mad for everything.

Why is cursing considered "mature"? If anything it's kinda immature, dontcha think? I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with having it in there, but to actually be upset that it's gone is kinda crazy. Removing cursing from a game has never hurt the experience, but ADDING it in for no reason definitely has a negative effect (on me at least). Look at crappy games like the new BIONIC COMMANDO. It just seems so "teenager". Rated M does NOT mean MATURE.
August 30, 2009 at 6:31 pm
I was thinking I might double dip and get Trilogy, but after seeing this how could I purchase a game that has it it's playability neutered so?
August 30, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Tobe honest, in the original, "damn" sounded a bit forced, like they were saying "hur hur this is a T-rated game!" but it is kinda stupid to censor one instance of mild language in a T-rated game.
August 30, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Damn I hate many of the things Nintendo do. Totally silly. That's it. Definitely not buying the trilogy.
@ArakniD
Just "got" Disaster and played it. It is officially the last game I will have dl'd and played before school starts tomorrow.

Holy overly defensive fanboy Batman.
Stopping you for a moment, Damn is pretty tame of a curse word and seems befitting for the situation. It's not that it makes it mature which is why your argument is flawed, but more so why remove it?
It's not even a legitimate curse word if you think about it.

This IS Nintendo of America we're talking about.
They're worried more about content then Disney seems to be. lol

That was actually one of my favourite scenes from the original version because I found it so surprising for a Nintendo game. Good thing I kept the original. A nice piece of Nintendo history
August 30, 2009 at 6:53 pm
...really? >_> When I first heard that (apparently terribly terrible) word in MP3 it said to me the following:
"Holy crap! Retro really means business with this one!"
What does this say to me? Nintendo doesn't like to help fight the stereotype of them being kiddie, even when the scenario in question MAKES PERFECT LOGICAL SENSE and is kind of killed mood-wise by the censor. C'mon!

Wow, between this, the lost title screens, and all of the missing effects, I really wish I hadn't bought this and stuck to the originals.
Damn (heh) you Nintendo!

wait, you sold/gave away your originals?
Even I was sane enough to keep my copy of MP3, even if I hadnt played it.

OMG A SINGLE WORD GOT ALTERED, THIS IS A NO BUY NOW!!!!
If this bothers you so much then I seriously don't get you people anymore. It's not NEARLY as bad as what happened pre-ESRB, or what a company like 4Kids could do. Since when the hell did the lack of a ****ing word cause people to get all pissy?
Cursing =/= game or grammar quality.

I wouldn't mind if "No" didn't sound so stupid and out of place. It's like they took it out of the middle of another sentence and it sounds that way.

@Eternal Rain
After a long rapid-fire session, the gun no longer smokes.
The water no longer ripples when it its shot or jumped in (but still splashes).
No heat effect somewhere.
No ice effect on the gun.
These are the ones that I've read, and I would be more specific, but this is the first time I've played these games so.. yeah...
And it's just in the first Prime, the other 2 are fine.
And yes, texture quality is better.

Water no longer is interactive (no ripples when shot or moved through), many of Samus's gun effects were removed, such as the heat ripples after over-use, the ice-beam freezing when charged, electrical sparks no longer shoot from the Wave Beam and more.
There's a huge thread at IGN and GameFaqs about this...couldn't find the IGN one, but here's the Gfaqs one:

@ArakniD
Well, I still have Metroid Prime 1, which I'm actually replaying on the GameCube, for both the added effects, and as it turns out, I prefer the GCN controls for that game (it was designed with them in mind, and I love the GCN controller). I never played 2, and sold Corruption a while back. I was hoping Trilogy would be the perfect package, but alas, it isn't. (I really do miss those title screens--they set the mood perfectly).
@Eternal Rain
It's not just the single word--it's everything: Missing effects, changed scan logs, loss of title screens, no GCN controller support for the originals.
To people who have never played the originals, these aren't that big of a deal. But to me, they are, and I want to play the games as originally intended.

@ArakniD
Kinda makes me wonder why Nintendo and other devs doesn't use the dual layered disc more often. I know Brawl used it mainly because of the music taking up so much space, but why didn't Next Level use it when they said Punch-Out!! almost didn't fit, or why didn't Retro use it when some small effects had to be dropped in favor of upping textures? That's one thing about Nintendo I DO question, why they're being tightwads to even their own devs on the dual layered dics.
@AndreGX
The lack of Gamecube controller support is a given. MP1 and 2 are New Play Control titles now, what do you expect? NPC Pikmin didn't have Cube controller support.
Eh, even though I still own the originals I'm getting this in the future anyway. Not gonna "wait for a price drop" because if MP3 ALONE is still $50 (same for TP, which really makes me go "WTF?" because that was a launch title) then this game is not dropping price anytime soon unless Nintendo FINALLY brings back Players Choice.

@Eternal Rain
Correct me if I'm wrong, but MPT IS on a dual layered disc. They didn't drop effects in favor of textures... the gun effects were dropped because Metroid Prime 1 programmed them poorly and they didn't want to go through all the trouble of fixing them. I don't know about the water.

@Eternal Rain
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this Trilogy is on a Dual-Layer DVD.
Otherwise, I dont think all 3 games would have fit.
But the reason those gun effects were left off of Prime 1 is because Prime 1's engine coded those effects to render on screen (similar to the fog/raindrops on the visor).
At least thats what I understand.
Prime 2 on the other hand coded those things to be rendered onto the 3D model of the gun (as they should have been in Prime 1 as most would agree).
They would have had to re-make Prime 1 using Prime 2/3's engine in order to make all the effects come to fruition I think, which is a complete waste of time and resources.
I really dont care, I'm enjoying the hell out of this pack and I am VERY grateful for it.
@AndreGX
I love Wii controls too much to even want to use the GCN controller.
I hate Dual-Analog with a passion and thats what kept me from the prime games to begin with.
Just my opinion of course.

yeah yeah more nintendo bashing , sure you all can't see that they did what ... release three TRULY ENHANCED game for the price of one . And you think that's just not good enough?
Can't you see that you just hoped of nintendo hate bandwagon for absolutely no reason
oh and for the record , i think that retro , with its trilogy , just released the BEST ADVENTURE FPS EVER on console . Probably it will never be match, because pointer control are just not an option with fixed camera system.
So yeah nintendo don't care about "mature" kiddies but they did release the best adventure fps .
Please continue your bashing

@COlimar788
Oh, I stand corrected. I misread the statement as "a single layered disc" when it really says " a single DUAL layered disc." My mistake, but I do still wonder why Nintendo doesn't use it more often.
They were programmed poorly? Hmm, who was it from Retro that said that, or do you just happen to know from some other source?

"programmed poorly" is an opinion.
For the time, it obviously worked great, since people are missing it.
But as time pass, they realized (perhaps) that there was a smarter way of doing it.

Basically I was referring to what ArakniD said, and I just heard it from people online. But it makes sense, and as far as I'm concerned unless someone from Retro comes out and explains it it's our best bet.
I guess "programmed poorly" wasn't a good way to put it... more like programmed differently from the effects in Primes 2 and 3 and thus causing complications.

this is like the ganondorf censorship, and the edits of the mirror shield and gerudo palace and temple
and dont anybody bring up the muslim crap, because no other religion is gonna freak because you put a cross or ying yang in your damn game, bow to no man, i says
@HERZOG
its not like we are fussing that they didnt add the word "damn" its that THEY REMOVED IT
plus, as long as you have moderated cussing, it can make for a more believable game.
i cant imagine satan ripping out your mothers heart from her eyeballs, and you scream out "darn you satan, i will destroy you" its like how cartoon network destroys anime with stupid censorship (which is why all anime should be played on adult swim, where muskets arent replaced with squirtguns, and kill isnt relabled "destroy"...actually, how about just airing the original episodes subbed?)

I am glad I haven't purchased this "not the ultimate" Trilogy pack yet. With the removal of certain visual effects and now the censorship, I will continue to hold on to my originals and wait to see what else has changed in the trilogy.
August 30, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Wow, this is about as bad as Disney censorship. The damn went with the events going on. If people find that offensive, they need to crawl out from under the 1950's rock.
August 30, 2009 at 7:40 pm
I don't know what's more sad. The censorship or that this guy noticed it.

This is absurd. I could understand for an expanded audience title, but come one, this title is one of the last straws core Nintendo fans are grasping for.
Not to mention that it is a rather conservative curse word, and one that was used adequately for the scenario.
Nintendo and the kiddie image hand in hand.
Fanboys, you can all DAMN yourselves.

You are absolutely correct.
I guess you could call it "Uno-Analog" as everything was on the one control stick.
Which is even worse then Dual-Analog.

Kinda silly, but it isn't a major blow to the game. And, it doesn't even sound like the same voice actor in the trilogy version.
August 30, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I was watching the original Ninja Turtles movie earlier, and the word "damn" is used tons of times in that movie. And that was like...rated PG. Not even PG-13.
Anyway, this, along with the missing effects make this Trilogy seem kinda...not the "definitive" versions of the games.

Eh, this is really stupid, but not game-breaking in any way. Boo censorship.
August 30, 2009 at 9:01 pm
so Metroid Prime Trilogy comes with improved controls, slightly improved graphics, better multiplayer (due to controls), and other neat changes like Flaaghra's theme, and Fission Metroids in the depths of phazon mine (Sorry only played the 1st so far) and the censorship of one unimportant word is causing people to freak out?
just play the damn (lol) game and you'll forget all about it. Metroid Prime Trilogy without question is the best Trilogy set ever in video games. this especially goes to anyone who missed playing one of these games.

Ever read a Matt Casamassina N64-game review? That guy would inspect a game's every texture with a friggin' microscope, looking to dock a game a few points in the graphics category for the tiniest amount of blur or even an off-center pixel.
Anyway: "Bad" news. Manufactured outrage. Everyone's a fanboy. Mountain Dew. Pepsi Cola. See you in the next thread.

If you guys are getting your panties in a bunch over the removal of a single word, then I'll gladly take your gamer licenses away, as you've obviously aren't fit to hold them. Complaining about the removal of visual effects is one thing, but this is just juvenile.
Won't affect my purchase anyways, as I already have all three Metroid Prime Games.

Well, with all the changes reported so far, I'm glad I'm keeping all three original games.

@ArakniD
That's kind of weird, as Trilogy also controls with a single analog-stick, plus IR for aiming.
Anyway, my point was that the game was designed with the GCN controller in mind, and imo, it feels better using it. It has a few advantages too--the analog lock-on doesn't work as well on Wii (due to lack of analog buttons) and I don't like the on-screen menu for switching visors and beams, which pulls me out of the game slightly (and is slower than a button press).

Well I'm not so sure it's really censoring. The word is so minor it just doesn't make sense. Maybe they just thought "NO!!!" would sound better. It does sounds a bit more desperate.
I don't know it just seems too petty and minor to alter for censoring concerns.
I really don't think Nintendo would be that illogical.

and then they forget ever ruining anime again.
if you really like ANY kind of media, watch it in the way it was meant to be. i dont mind dubs, as long as they arent censored, and they put some effort into it.
but i was talking about adult swim, im sure that audience would be more open to subs.

it was more like DAYUM. Changing it to "no" removed the southern drawl.

serisouly ...WHO gets offended by the word "damn"?
I bet nobody that plays games with shooting in it cares...
this is so stupid. "OMG let's shield our kids from that evil word "damn" so they can learn the word "f***" from their schoolmates instead" ... ridiculous

Another change that I don't think I've seen here: Talloric Alloy in Prime 1 is now called Sandstone.

I don't know why they did that. It's lame.
But guys, that doesn't mean you should get rid of the game! Just because they messed up one good line doesn't mean you shouldn't get it! I really like the game and I really recommend it.

That's just stupid. This isn't about getting upset about the removal of a swear, it's about pointless censorship. Some people want to play the game how it was originally.

To people saying we're stupid for being mad: Nobody said they wouldn't play or buy it because of this. We just think the decision is stupid because there is no valid reason to have removed it unless they want to pretend Metroid is kid friendly. Enjoy your lies, Nintendo.
Pointless censorship is pointless no matter how you look at it.
And lol to whoever is acting like cursing is immature.
Some people honestly are just retarded it seems and just say OH MAN, CURSING IS IMMATURE.
No. Swearing excessively for no reason is immature. Saying one word in a reaction to something or in disbelief because of the magnitude of something terrible happening is not immature.
If someone yells the F word because they just had something heavy fall on their foot, it's not immature. And to portray that in film or a game is no less mature.
If anything, saying "Oh poopy!" in this situation is the immature response. Choke on that.

@GIAFGC
This. So much this.
I skipped ahead and played through Norion, and the way he re-says the line sounds a lot more like he's just then come to the realization about the planetary defense system.
@samusman
That's what they called bombable stuff in MP2. (Though are you sure? I thought I remembered seeing the word Talloric Alloy in a couple of scans. I know that they at least kept the words 'Cordite' and 'Bendezium')

If he said GOD DAMN and they changed it to just DAMN then I could understand why that would offend some people and agree with them. But just the word 'damn' is far from being offensive these days especially in a franchise that is supposed to be meant for core / older games.
Truly idiot 'soccer mom' style censorship.
