Something about it was a little off... could've been those kids. I would've preferred simple gameplay for the 30 second commercial, but then again i don't know anything about advertising.

-_-

Also what the hell.. that was the ACTUAL boxart?... Could less effort have possibly been put into that cover art.. seriously. Not trying to sound all b**** but WOW.

HOLY COW, DR MARIO!?

Seriously, this commercial is like a bunch of 13 year olds explaining astrophysics, does NOA really need to resort to this? It's a Mario game on the DS, it's going to sell. Have some creativity. D:

I don't know what you guys are talking about.

This is pretty much what Nintendo commercials used to be like for most games.

Do I like it? No.

But does it remind me of old Nintendo commercials? Yes.

@Stryks

I'm pretty sure that was the Japanese art too, though.

@someone17

Except it's mostly true. Whether we want to admit it or not, Nintendo advertises everything towards everyone but the majority of gamers. No matter what the game is, they are aiming at children.

The original Zelda commercial on NES flat out said "KIDS" and "YOUR PARENTS HELP YOU SET IT UP".

They've been aiming for kids since the beginning.

Wow. Witness as Nintendo completely labels this game only for elementary schoolers.

I have been looking forward to this game for a while... and I'm 20... so naturally I'm turned off by this commercial.

I don't get why they couldn't have used people of all ages for this. Aren't they after "everybody"?

Comments are here for people to express their views on the particular item. If people don't like it, they should say that.

It IS just a commercial... but if you think about it this is Nintendo's contact to "regular people" who don't lurk on the internet all day like us. That's why I'm concerned that this was not the best decision for this game.

All the people complaining need to know that the boxart's style is something that has been a recurring theme since the first Mario & Luigi RPG. In Japan, at least.

Mario & Luigi RPG:
http://stashbox.org/362639/ml1box.jpg

Mario & Luigi RPG 2X2:
http://stashbox.org/362641/ml2box.jpg

Nintendo remade the covers for the first two because they looked plain for them. I guess they're just too lazy this time around.

I like the use of negative space personally, it draws attention to what is important [i.e. the characters here].

So many developers clutter their boxarts pointlessly, and there are far worse boxarts out there, just look at KZ2's [for example]...

Hope we in Europe get this one too! :-P

No offends, but some of you are acting like tools.

Seriously, it's a Mario game, and mario's game are usually aimed for kids. What do you expect?

I think that some of you wish to see Mario acting like some kind of Rambo who's gonna kick the ass of bowser and by the way save the whole mushroom kingdom from his government, and at the end Mario dies just because it is more epic :D

I love the idea of people explaining the game with gameplay to stress explanations. I HATE that they only used children. What about me? I'm 22 years old and I'm going to buy and play this game. So is my girlfriend who is the same age. Then there is RMC who is in his late 20s. And scores of other adult gamers on this site or not who will also be buying this game.

A perfect implementation would be to have a child, a teen, a few adults of different ages, and a mature gamer (I'm talking senior citizen, not the 12 year olds on Live). Give them a demo of the game, sit them in front of a camera l, and then tell them to explain the game in their own words.

Bam! A cross section of gamers with different views of the world all giving their commentaries on the game which would amount to one awesome commercial that appeals to the everyone mantra of Nintendo.

@Killasnipersz
No. Mario games are generally not aimed at a specific demograph. They are usually targeted at everyone. YouTube some Mario commercials and you'll find that they generally make an ad campaign that isn't focused soley on children.

The boxart is in line with the previous two Japanese boxarts, and Nintendo likes their shiny, simple color white nowadays.

But, I also love the other two NA boxarts, despite cluttering. They had more character.

The commercial's okay. Nothing great like Punch-Out!!, but Nintendo has done worse.

I'm a little surprised by what I see here. I thought more people would be like "Nintendo are marketing geniuses" or something to that effect. I mean, if you are a kid, and you see a commercial with a bunch of other kids talking about how awesome a game is, wouldn't you want it? And there are plenty of kids in the world who can get this game. Like come on, you think the average adult would look at this and feel as though they have to have it? Nearly everything about Mario is for kids, and complaining about a commercial for a portable game targeting kids is straight laughable. Besides, you guys don't even need a commercial, because you are on this site. What, are you gonna download the ad and play it whenever you're about to load up your DS? Get over yourselves.

And the commercial didn't seem so bad to me. Sure, it's not the original Smash Bros. commercial, but there is nothing "horrible" about it. Y'all crazy.

At least this gets a commercial! I can only imagine what advertising Sin and Punishment 2 will get, seeing as it doesn't cater to Nintendo's favorite demographic.

Not say i particularly loved the commercial, i definetly enjoyes the punch-out!! ones a lot more, but i think it was an very well executed marketing wise.

Of course it was aimed at a younger audience than punch-out!! was, but kids their age are gonna see that commerical and gobble the game up.
It's one of those ads that really make the kid want the game.

It's not gonna be remembered as one of Nintendo's best commercials, but it was well done on a business side.

Then why dost thou postith on ye olde website? (Serious post: then why do you bother coming here if you've already moved on? I honestly would LOVE to see less negativity on this site. How ironic is it that most of the Nintendo negativity I find on the Internet is this website? [actually... don't even get me started on effing GameFAQs])

Seriously though, I think you're overreacting but whatever. My decision to buy a 360 to accompany my Wii was so I could play more games that I want, not because I was being all negative at the American branch of a Japanese video game company. Nintendo didn't "abandon" anyone, they just wanted more people. N64 and Gamecube saw poor sales for them, what would YOU do if you ran a company that wants money? Get more people to buy your products of course.

This commercial not only will get no one kids to buy it (won't work on anyone over 12-14 at least) but any serious gamer who plays rpgs who might actually have an interest in this game will surely lose much of that interest after seeing this commercial. I mean if I'd never seen this game before and all I saw was this commercial I wouldn't even want to rent it. What kind of crap is this.

Hopefully they will show this on kids channels only but more importantly they really need a second commercial for adults and teens. It's a very user friendly rpg and it's funny on top of that. It'd be a shame if only kids bought it.

I'm pretty sure this might only be on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. If you already knew about the game before hand and already intended on getting it, then I don't see how your interest in the game would suddenly wane just because of a silly commercial. At least it's getting one! *looks at Excitbots* Oh why couldn't this game have gotten some ads... even that freaking cowboy car salesman would have been better than nothing.

EDIT: This is a Mario game, why wouldn't it sell? (Hotel Mario excluded.)

I agree with that last sentence. It annoys me when people forget that MANY of us were kids when we started gaming. I was effing 3 years old when I started on the SNES! Been gaming for 16 years and I never plan on stopping.

Age 3- SNES
Age 6- Game Boy
Age 7- N64
Age 9- Game Boy Color and Genesis (the Genesis was a gift from someone my mom used to know)
Age 10- PS1
Age 11- Gamecube and GBA
Age 13- PS2
Age 14- DS
Age 16- Wii
Age 18- Xbox 360

1990s kids for the freaking win (we had the best cartoons too, lol).

Not to mention Mario himself was probably one of the first videogame characters we related to.

I just remembered something. When me and my cousin where around the age of these kids, we where playing TLOZ:ALTTP together (a single-player adventure game, no less) I remember us talking like idiots about Aghanim turning into a bat after defeting him and smashing into the top of the golden pyramid.

We 90s kids rule. :-D

[And I started gaming with a SNES & Megadrive myself.]

As for the commercial, which is it such a big problem for some of you on here? I mean, any Mario fan on here or elsewhere is [most likely] gonna pick this up commercial or not, so not cater it to the kids [the new 20' kids]?

I think some of you forget that the Wii kick-started gaming again alike the NES and SNES eras did, and so with it comes this new blood.

Certain overhyped HD console series games would also sell well regardless of an actual commercial, for the same reasons [particularly the half gaming market-sized FPS genre and the likes of Halo and the upcoming MW2].

"90's kids" is something my 25 year old fogey ass just started hearing recently.

I don't think people born when I was (1984) called ourselves '80's kids' though adults in the news and stuff said things like 'child of the eighties' referring to us being used to technology...

I remember in shows at the beginning of the 90's people would say things like 'You can't be rude to women! It's the 1990's!' 'Wake up! It's the 1990's! Lots of people are hanging out with people of different races!' or something, like they thought they were being really advanced or something lol.

But yeah, back on topic, I think the resentment from this ad comes from the fact that most of these online forum-dwelling gamers HATE to be reminded that they have a preoccupation with something that is mostly associated with kids. Like that 22 year old beating the 11 year old at pokemon at the championship...

Sure, we as adults can get into this game, teenagers can too. But the fact is kids can get into it just as deeply... and you can't hide from that. Kids aren't as likely to read adult books and get so into them, and we adults aren't likely to read 'Cat in the Hat' and have it become our favorite book, but most video games are in a very special and unique place as something we all can take a massive interest in. Don't be afraid or ashamed of that, but also don't get pissed at a commercial for reminding you that you like something that a 7 or 9 year old would be just as interested in.

If you aren't comfortable with that, get out! :) lol A lot of people just switch to 'hardcore' games like Halo 3 and guess what kids like that just as much, it makes them feel like they are doing something 'bad' they shouldn't do, which they mistake as 'adult.'

Bright colors FTW! lol

I think the problem is Nintendo (of America) is segregating it's audience with its ads.

Game A has marketing targeted strictly at women. Game B has marketing targeted strictly at children. Game C has marketing targeted strictly at the older working crowd. If you're lucky, Game D has clever marketing that would work for multiple audiences.

Yes, this is a Mario game. But last time I checked, Mario games were supposed to be made for everyone. Let me put it this way: you WON'T see advertisments for Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics with a bunch of kids talking about the 'cool sports' you can play. It's just not a smart method of advertising when you want to reach a BROAD audience, which Nintendo was *supposed* to be doing. :P

Look at the Japanese ads for the game (Mario and Luigi RPG 3 in Japan). The worst you get is a young woman of indeterminate age playing the game and reacting to what happens. Lots of gameplay footage. Gets you interested about the game more than kids saying how cool and awesome it is.

You're missing the point. Completely. It's not that people don't want it marketed to kids. People don't want a game that appeals to everyone marketed solely to kids. They want marketing that will attract all ages. As burgers said people don't want marketing segregated like this.
