WII AT $199.99 BEGINNING SEPT. 27

World of Nintendo Events, Key Software Releases Further Demonstrate System's Incomparable Value

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 23, 2009 – Beginning Sunday, Sept. 27, the world's most popular home video game system gets even more appealing. On that day, Nintendo's suggested retail price for its record-setting Wii™ drops by $50 to $199.99. The new $199.99 Wii price point delivers the full iconic Wii gaming experience, including the motion-sensing Wii Remote™ controller, Nunchuk™ controller and Wii Sports™ software, and furthers Nintendo's mission to expand the gaming universe by making video games accessible to more and more consumers.

Wii ownership also opens an avenue for players to the industry's most diverse and unique collection of home console games. Key upcoming releases include Wii Fit™ Plus, launching on Oct. 4, and the first truly multiplayer Mario™ title ever, New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii.

Both new and veteran players in America can jump into this new Mario action when it arrives on Nov. 15.

And beginning Oct. 2, consumers in select cities will have a new, convenient way to decide which Nintendo adventure to tackle next. On that day, a novel series of sampling events called "World of Nintendo" kicks off in Long Beach, Calif.

"Wii has reached more video game players than any game system before because it attracts everyone—both men and women, and people of all ages," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Our research shows there are 50 million Americans thinking about becoming gamers, and this more affordable price point and our vast array of new software mean many of them can now make the leap and find experiences that appeal to them, whatever their tastes or level of gaming experience."

The inherent social nature of Wii is fully demonstrated in a groundbreaking way with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the first Mario game ever to allow four players to take part in the action at the same time. That same dynamic is propelling the enthusiastic response for Wii Sports Resort™, while the release of Wii Fit Plus includes everything you love about Wii Fit™, along with new multiplayer elements and the ability to customize workouts to fit individual needs.

See below for full details on the World of Nintendo events that are scheduled to take place in Long Beach, Philadelphia and New York throughout the month of October.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

I suggest the price drop another $100. I think it would be a fair price for the features included and frustrations that occur when trying to have fun online.

We're not "defenders" you jackass.

Nintendo openly stated it was following a blue ocean strategy. We were assuming (and reasonably so) that it was still following that strategy. Nintendo has apparently changed that strategy, unless of course it's selling off all of its current Wiis to make way for a new Wii Sports Resort SKU.

I did hear that rumor about the new $250 bundle. I don't know when/if we'll hear about it though.

I really don't think the Wii itself needs a price drop at this point...the only things I would like are updates and games. I wish Nintendo would pursue third parties like Microsoft and Sony do for their consoles, but Nintendo doesn't really seem to be doing that much, other than working directly with third parties like Team Ninja and Sega on certain games.

As someone who got the system at launch, I feel robbed. That is what I get for being impatient and all "ZOMG the Wii! I have to have it ASAP." What is the saying? "All good things come to those who wait" ? Yup I really should stick to that! Like others have said, it should have been $199.99 in the first place, but as Wii sales have shown, $249.99 really is a mass market price.

Also, someone here suggested that they drop it to $149.99? The DSi costs $169.99! There is no way they would make a home console like the Wii cost less than their best selling [line of] hand-held[s].

I bought the Wii for Brawl about a month before it's first expected release in late 2007. I bought it for Brawl, I play it every day, and I have a few other games for it; I loved RE4, I'm loving Galaxy, and I had a good time during my quick Guitar Hero frenzy.

My Brawl Box is all right, but my DSi gets all my love and play time :)

You feel robbed because something you bought THREE years ago is now cheaper? That's insane.

If they had dropped the price as quick as Sony did their first cut, then I'd feel robbed, but they waited some 34 months to drop it a small (but significant) $50.

This won't sale more than a few hundred more units. The Wii peaked ages ago at 52 million [since a console will never sell as much as a handheld], this far into a generation, console sales mean nothing compared to software sales.

Ok well if anything I say "robbed" because of how close in price the PS3 is to the Wii right now and considering how much more powerful it is. And 50 extra bucks doesn't seem like much, but that could get me another game.

"Nintendo is feeling the pressure from the HD twins, hehe."

No, Nintendo is feeling the pressure of decreasing Wii sales. It has nothing to do with Sony or Microsoft unless or until their new motion controllers start to sell noticeable amounts of hardware/software.

Nintendo should have never released Wii Music. Should have done New Super Mario Bros. Wii back then.

Okay, you got me! Even though the 360 and PS3 just had a price drop. I guess it's all a coincidence or something? Not. You honestly think Nintendo didn't feel pressure when consumers could cough up an extra $50 to get a system that plays games/DVD's or games/Blu-ray's and outputs in HD? Not saying the dipping sales didn't encourage their decision because it certainly did, but let's be realistic. As for the new motion controllers being a "threat" to Nintendo: 3rd party games already sell better on 360/PS3. The new controllers are only going to help put up bigger numbers (even if they're used to add stupid waggle, Wii games are proof that the casual audience will buy anything). :P

"You honestly think Nintendo didn't feel pressure when consumers could cough up an extra $50 to get a system that plays games/DVD's or games/Blu-ray's and outputs in HD?"

Do you have any idea why people buy a Wii? It has nothing to do with HD capabilities or DVD players. News flash: most people already have DVD players. Blu-ray isn't creating a huge demand for the PS3.

People buy a Wii for the games. Mario. Zelda. Metroid. Wii Sports/Resort. Wii Fit. It has nothing to do with raw hardware capabilities. But it does have a lot to do with accessibility.

Do you think a Wii Fit owner sees any sort of value in a built-in DVD player that the person already owns? Don't confuse your values for those of the expanded audience.

"3rd party games already sell better on 360/PS3."

Yes this is generally true because third parties put more effort into the PS3/360 versions and still follow the old trend raw graphical horsepower and increasingly complex/cinematic game play. There is a reason developers said early on that developing for the Wii would generally have to be done ground-up because the system is so different.

"The new controllers are only going to help put up bigger numbers (even if they're used to add stupid waggle, Wii games are proof that the casual audience will buy anything)."

What are you talking about? No they won't. Have you even taken a look at third party sales numbers? EA Sports Active is the only fitness title I know of not made by Nintendo that has sold more than a million units. A few companies have gotten away with releasing Wii Sports clones, but by and large they fail.

No third party titles have come anywhere close to the top first titles.

And as far as saying "stupid waggle" and "casual," you're only making yourself look ignorant. Here you're calling these alleged "casual" gamers "retards!" and saying that they will buy anything. Really? Where are the numbers to back these assertions up?

There's a reason Malstrom defines "casual" as "retard." It's because of guys like you who think of the expanded audience as retards.

@DoubleDragon

I never said it was THE defining factor in choosing a system to buy. But when you can spend a little extra money and get more bang for your buck, people are going to do so. You say people buy a Wii for that list of games, when in reality the last three are probably most commonly purchased by the casual audience (you know, the majority of Wii owners). I doubt any casual buyers are dying to play the next Mario, Zelda, or Metroid. And yeah, I already own a DVD player, but I think it would be an extra incentive if Wii played them as well. It takes less time to set up and I wouldn't have to keep turning different devices on/off. Convenience does wonders.

My new controller comment was referring to all games, not just third party. There's tons of games that have sold way more copies than they deserve to. I'm looking at games like Red Steel and Wii Music. They aren't good games at all, yet still they sell boatloads. There's no quality control and in most cases, motion is incorporated in the stupidest ways imaginable, and rewarded with millions of sales.

I never said they were "retards." Thanks for putting words in my mouth, I guess. You're a fool if you think that people won't buy crappy games on a whim just because they think it will be fun.. without having any prior knowledge of it, besides what is on the back of the box.
