October 6, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, virtual console

Greg Johson, co-creator of ToeJam and Earl has heard all the ruckus about the alien duo not appearing in Sonic and SEGA All-Star Racing, and he has commented on the official SEGA forums to let us know the real deal. It turns out that SEGA won't pony up the cash to include the alien pair. He also happens to nudge at work on a new TJ&E game

Yo Wha'sup. Big Earl here, a.k.a. Greg Johnson - co-creator of the ToeJam and Earl games.

I just want to let you know that I hear you my alien brothers and sisters, and your voices make a difference. I can't promise anything but I'll give it another try and see if I can get the homies at Sega to talk again on the phone. No promises, but I'll see what their interest level is. Hopefully they can see what amazing devoted fans TJ&E has. Hurray for the FUNK! Well if I get any news I'll come back and post it here. And I'll keep trying to get some new TJ&E game off the ground. No publisher has agreed to foot the bill yet, but never say never. The funky duo shall yet return.

Thanks for keeping the faith after so many years. Who says you can't make a difference.

Big Earl out...

In another response, we learn that the creators of TJ&E haven't seen any money from the Virtual Console releases of TJ&E...

We’ve already allowed Sega to publish the ToeJam and Earl games on the Wii for free (we get not a penny for that).

You can find both responses in full here and here (thanks NO and Cinbrad!)

TJ&E need to be in the game. I'd pony up cash for that.

Seriously, Sega would make their shelling out funs for the pair back, and they've been so good about making "gamer's games" of late.

SEGA makes other, better games, though. Sonic WAS good, but SEGA still made/makes other great games. No reason to hate for one franchise going to s***.

I honestly think, though, that even with all of your nostalgic love for TJ&E, the series wouldn't be worth SEGA trying to do a whole lot with.

Then again, neither can Sonic where he is now, and they keep trying. lol.

Who would have guessed that SEGA is a rude and thoughtless company?

@MoldyClay

Not just Sonic
Crazy Taxi the third one was crap
Nights that Wii on sucked
Super monkey ball banana blitz was bad (thoughy Step and Roll has me pretty intrigued)
Samba Wii version the controls were too wild and akward.

If they can't find a publisher, they should do a digital release by themselves.

On WiiWare or DSiWare or even PSN or XBLA.

It'd be nice to see Toejam and Earl return, either in this game or in their own game. But, how does this piece of news make SEGA greedy, rude, and thoughtless? Since when are they suddenly obligated to add Toejam and Earl, or any other character for that matter, to the game? It was my understanding that SEGA, along with everyone else making games, has creative control over what they do for their games, and are able to include and exclude any character they damn well want. Perhaps I'm wrong here?

If Sega has the publishing rights to the characters, doesn't that mean they can do with them as they please?

Like how Microsoft has the publishing rights to the Halo series.
