October 9, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: GoNintendo Updates, Nintendo in general

Believe it or not, putting together a top 10 list of N64 games with our friends at GameDaily was pretty damn tough...but for reasons I didn't expect.

I was actually discussing top N64 games with the GoNintendo podcast crew a few days back. I thought the list would be quite hard to put together, as I didn't believe there to be many top-tier N64 titles. Nintendo definitely hit a rough patch with the N64 when it came to third-party support, which mean a library that was substantially smaller than the PS1. Taking that into account, the crew and I started naming titles.

As the list went on and on, I realized just how many high-quality games there were. While the overall library size wasn't that huge, the games that managed to wow us did so more than any other platform out there. Nintendo managed to take their established franchises and move them into the realm of 3d, which is no small task. Couple those achievements with some truly outstanding third-party efforts, and you've got quite a list to drool over.

Number 10 - WWF No Mercy

highlights_21.jpg

Whether you like wrestling or not, there's no denying that the Nintendo 64 was the king of wrestling games. Many believe to this day that no other console or portable wrestling outings have been able to top what was achieved on the N64. While there were multiple WWF games on the system, it's WWF No Mercy that stands head and shoulders above the rest...right before it piledrives you into the ground.

WWF No Mercy brought us one step closer to matching the real-life world of the WWF. Superstar intros were spot-on, theme songs rocked us into the ring, and the squared-circle grappling was completely different from any other wrestling system at the time. While all those features are great, it's the Create a Wrestler and 4-player modes that secured this game a spot on the list. I know I've spent hours upon hours creating some hilarious wrestlers, and then spent even longer hopping into the ring with friends. I've yet to experience wrestling game fun like WWF No Mercy.

Number 9 - Paper Mario

paper_mario_002.jpg

Who knew that Paper Mario would be so successful that it would spawn a series? Talk about a step in the right direction for the N64!

I remember being absolutely blown away by the previews and first screens of Paper Mario. I couldn't believe that Nintendo was really going with this 2d approach to Mario. Such a unique visual style that not only caught your attention, but also played directly into the game. Folding up into a paper airplane just doesn't make sense in any other game! It's this combination of visual and gameplay imagination that really took the Nintendo fans by storm.

Of course, we can't forget that this was Mario's return to the RPG formula! Nintendo showed us that they didn't need help from Squaresoft in order to create an outstanding RPG outing for Mario, complete with its own sense of humor and style. It's these not-so-humble beginnings that have turned the Paper Mario franchise into a long-running staple for the Big N.

Super Smash Bros.

N64_Super_Smash_Bros_1180663530.jpg

Speaking of big franchises, do they come any bigger than Super Smash Bros.? There's only been three entries in the Smash Bros. series, with the N64 giving birth to the game that would sweep the nation. A Nintendo-created fighting game that features characters from all of Nintendo's biggest games? This sounds like a fan's dream come true!

Of course, that's exactly what Super Smash Bros. is. Not only is it great to see Nintendo bring so much fan service into one game, but on top of all that you have an extremely unique fighting mechanic that's unlike anything else out there. It's not just about damaging your opponent, it's about throwing them completely off the screen! Super Smash Bros. quickly established itself as a top-tier fighter, and was subsequently added to tournaments all around the world. Now the franchise is bigger than ever, thanks to the 4-player bash that kicked off on the N64.

Mario Kart 64

kart64_1.jpg

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Mario Kart 64 has one of the best local multiplayer modes of all-time. I could go on and on about the balloon battle mode in Mario Kart 64. I'm pretty sure that this aspect of the game stole away years of my life, as well as the lives of my friends. I think all of us could sit down and go at the multiplayer mode for hours on end, no matter how tired or bloodshot our eyes became.

What do you do when your done with battle mode? You hope into some circuit races, of course! Mario Kart 64 gave us more tracks and hazards than ever before. Now that we could take 3 other players with us on the tracks, the racing became even more intense than what the SNES provided. Sure, the single-player A.I. on opponents is rubber-banding to the max, but that doesn't matter. No matter how you look at it, Mario Kart 64 is highly regarded as the best entry in the series by many...and for good reason!

StarFox 64

Star_Fox_64_Battle.jpg

While the original StarFox showed us what the FX Chip could do on the SNES, StarFox 64 really took things to the next level. While the game itself is a blast, it's the peripheral that it launched that changed the entire industry.

Without the introduction of the StarFox 64/Rumble Pak bundle, who knows what today's controllers would be like? Nintendo without a doubt made rumble a staple in all game controllers, which is something that lives on to this day. I'll never forget my sheer amazement at taking on the first level in StarFox 64 with the Rumble Pak buzzing away. It may have been bulky and loud, but it was an important step for the game industry when it came to controller immersion.

Oh, and shooting Slippy down is reason enough for any StarFox game to make it onto a top 10 list!

You've read half of what GoNintendo and GameDaily think are the best games on the N64. Click here to read what we came up with for our top 5 choices!

I'd get Conker in there instead of WWF, and put MM up higher (I have more fond memories of it than OoT).

pretty good list, other than that wrestling game that I never played, that would pretty much be my list too.

I would, however like to put Sin $ Punishment there, even though only japan got that game (untill it was released on VC)

Inb4everyone complains about the list or how their favorite game wasn't on it. xD

I personally would've probably put Smash at number one. While it was in no means the greatest game on the ol' 64, I'll be danged if I didn't get a couple hundred hours of play time out'a that game! :D

PS: Sorry, RMC, don'cha know that once you fail on the internet, doesn't matter what you do, it's always fail. lol XD

My list:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2. Super Mario 64
3. Star Fox 64
4. Mario Kart 64
5. GoldenEye 007
6. Paper Mario
7. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
8. Super Smash Bros.
9. Yoshi's Story (damned if you say otherwise)
10. Perfect Dark

Notice how there's no Banjo on that list? Yeah...

EDIT: Oh, and while I personally never played the wrestling games on N64 (that's why they're not on my list), can you BELIEVE that someone was touting how great the PS1 was when it came to wrestling titles and didn't even mention the Nintendo 64 the other day? FOR SHAME!

Yeah, if PS1 had all the Grade A titles, then what few titles N64 did were grade S++ (or the Rainbow V).

Looking back on my ps2, I don't even care that I don't have a ps1 formatted memory card to save any of my ps1 games on, because I'd rather play Ogre Battle 64 over Final Fantasy Tactics, Hybrid Heaven over Metal Gear Solid, Star Soldier Vanishing Earth over... what, Einhander maybe? Goemon 5 and 6 over Tomba and Crash Bandicoot. And Castlevania over Symphony of the Night (a real Castlevania and the best 3d one to date over a metroidvania).

first: now dont hate on me because im giving my opinion...thats all it is...MY opinion
now...id replace either banjo kazooie or star fox with blast corps...have wwf no mercy be tied with wcw vs. nwo: revenge (both are awesome games....i cant choose)...and even though i havent played paper mario....i played the thousand year door...and from what ive heard...the original seems just as awesome as that one...so i would think that it deserves to be up there....thats my top 10 and not necessarily in this order....i dont feel like thinking right now lol

I agree with Banjo Kazooie! I think when making a list like this, you should include games that stand the test of time, and recently I went back to play Banjo (N64 original, not XBL) and it wasn't nearly as good as games like Super Mario 64.

Also... what... is... up... with... all... of... the... periods???

1. Zelda Ocarina of Time
2. Harvest Moon 64
3. Majoras Mask
4. Ogre Batle 64
5. Paper Mario

I based my list on how much fun I had with them at the time, and how well they aged.

Well, well...this list is far less objectionable than the last two. Oh, except you don't fold into a paper airplane in the original Paper Mario.

My personal list:
1. Super Mario 64
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Paper Mario
4. Majora's Mask
5. Star Fox 64
6. F-Zero X
7. Mario Kart 64
8. Banjo-Tooie (never owned the original, oddly enough)
9. Mario Party 3
10. Donkey Kong 64

Yeah...I'm really not into FPS at all. :P

My entire N64 game collection in order of awesomeness:
1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
3. Banjo-Kazooie
4. Pokemon Stadium
5. Harvest Moon 64
6. Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
7. Quest 64

...And that's it. Seriously. I did, however, borrow Banjo-Tooie from a friend, so I guess that would go right after Banjo-Kazooie. Also not counting games that were on the N64, but I played them on another console, i.e. Rayman 2,Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Virtual Console games etc.

My list would have included:

Conker's Bad Fur Day

San Francisco RUSH

I may have even added Shadowman, because that game was awesome.

But Zelda and Mario are undeniably the best on the system.

I know WWF No Mercy was ruined for many people in Europe (maybe other places as well) by the bug which would wipe its internal memory (so all saved data). Thankfully, the game did support memory cards (which got round this) but I still nicknamed the game "WWF: No Memory".

The lack of F-Zero X is my main problem with the top 10 list but it is kind of shocking looking back remembering in the day how the N64 had literally no games out for it and yet now when it comes to top 10s you can rattle off at least 20 good candidates :(

Might be a good time to remind everyone RMC is a fan of wrestling, and honestly WWF No Mercy is arguably one of the best wrestling games of all time (I own it and it's pretty darn fun).

I'll go ahead and do my own personal list just because:

10. Perfect Dark
9. Conker's Bad Fur Day
8. Paper Mario
7. Sin and Punishment (yeah I know it was Japan-only until the VC release but hey it still counts)
6. Star Fox 64
5. Banjo-Kazooie AND Tooie (just can't choose one over the other)
4. Ocarina of Time
3. Goldeneye 64
2. Super Mario 64
1. Majora's Mask

Honorable mentions:

-Every other RARE developed N64 game (they were definitely in their prime during this era)

-Body Harvest (a sci-fi game made by the same people who now make the GTA series)

-Star Wars: Rouge Squadron and Shadows of the Empire (unfortunately I don't actually own these two myself [don't know why...] but I remember loving them when I rented them),

-All of the N64 Bomberman games (same as before, I really don't know why I never bought them when I had the chance [well except for the first one, originally I was going to buy Bomberman 64 but I got Banjo-Kazooie instead, and I'll admit that I do NOT regret my decision])

-Turok back when it was still good and not about stereotypical space marines

-Castlevania 64 (I know people nowadays like to look back at this game and bash it as "the reason why 3D Castlevania doesn't work," but also note that the game actually DID get GOOD reviews when it first came out, and honestly I liked it more than Lament of Innocence for the PS2)

My personal list [in no particular order]. And yes, I couldn't [didn't wanna] make it into 10, so sue me:

Banjo-Kazooie
Donkey Kong 64
Mario 64
Pilotwings
Mario Kart
Starfox 64
Waverace 64
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Paper Mario
Diddy Kong Racing
Mischief Makers
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Stadium
Yoshi's Story

Yep, sooo original I know [I strayed from first party titles more with the Gamecube though].

I'm not into FPS' [that aren't Timesplitters], though Goldeneyes' multiplayer was good. I just enjoyed all these more than that segment of it.

Because nobody else mentioned them, and because they are totally awesome games:

Beetle Adventure Racing - An amazing (but oft forgotten) arcade racing title that feature prominent placing of the then new VW Beetle.

The New Tetris - Best console tetris game released, bar none. Everything about this game screamed quality that simply hasn't been matched on any console since. Even worse, the rules for how Tetris games are created changed for the worse after it was released... so there is no hope that a better (official) version will be released in the future.

Wait...you teamed up with GameDaily. Aren't their lists one of the things that posters complain about the most?

Anyway, GameDaily have some incorrect screenshots on their half. GoldenEye is the canned XBLA version and Ocarina of Time is a ROM mod.

And for no good reason, my top 10 N64 games:

10. Worms: Armageddon (no console version since this has matched it)
9. Diddy Kong Racing
8. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
7. Super Mario 64
6. Lylat Wars
5. Conker's Bad Fur Day
4. Jet Force Gemini
3. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2. Perfect Dark
1. Banjo-Kazooie - Unlike Tooie, this one has definitely stood the test of time.

As you can tell, I was (and still am) a massive Rare fan.

Tetrisphere was also a good game, but I meant "The New Tetris". It's just normal tetris, but in a sexy package. While most people don't care which version of the game they play, when you are a serious fan then the small differences look much bigger.

"Why do you say Yoshi's Story was a letdown?"

Yoshi's Story was a terrible game, especially for someone coming off of Yoshi's Island just a few years earlier. Yoshi's Story has lackluster levels, no goal or end to the levels (you instead collect fruit until you're full), unimaginative enemies, and just craptacular game play all over. And I'm a die hard Mario/Yoshi fan saying this.

I've honestly never seen someone praise Yoshi's Story. It's surprising to me.

WWF No Mercy was one of the most-played N64 games that I own. I've spent so many hours playing against my brother cousins and friends, and we'd always have the belts on the line.
So, the belts, you know, changed hands almost all the time.
It's too bad that Smackdown lived as long as it did. It's a shame that it wasn't the AKI wrestling games that got super popular instead. I guess this is what happens when you're made exclusively for the less popular system.

If AKi was still around making WWE games, I believe the Wrestling game genre would be far more advanced that it is now.

I mean, just look at WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010. After 2 generations, it's just now letting players edit Superstars!?
I was doing that with Fire Pro Wrestling and AKI games more than a decade ago!! I even made bald Kane when he changed.

The Smackdown games STILL won't allow you to walk and run on the apron, give every superstar and created character multiple outfits, allow females to hold onto male-dominated championships, or let you raise wrestlers onto your shoulders for various double team attacks!

WWF No Mercy may have had frame rate problems with 4 players on the screen simultaneously (up to 3 was fine) and was blocky as hell, but when it comes to gameplay and extra features, the most popular wrestling game today is still playing catch-up. My friends and I were already creating and trading created wrestlers with WWF No Mercy, that gave you the ability to copy or move your creations onto a memory card. You could either go to their house and load your wrestler onto their game cartridge/memory card.
If my friend's character was Intercontinental Champion, and he brought him over to my house, we'd play for the title. If my friend loses the title in the last match played, the belt stays with my character on my memory card/cartridge. My friend goes back with NOTHING (muwahahaha)! The belt's not there anymore (the championship slot on his game cartridge will be empty), so the only way to get it back is to fight my wrestler again.

It's like combining game stats.
Why isn't Smackdown vs. Raw doing this? It says 2010 in the freakin' title! They're always removing things. Creating titles are gone. No Online play on the Wii? No online character trading on the Wii? No editing Superstars on the Wii?

Really now?

Were they even trying to create an equal game with the same gameplay modes on the Wii, or will Wii-owners have to "wait until next year", like so many other games in a series?

WWF No Mercy FTW!

I feel like it's kinda cheap having two alike Zeldas on the list. I mean, yea, there's two Mario games but they're totally different games.

Still, though, aside from that Wrestling game which I've never played, I woulda stuck Pokemon Stadium 2 on there, switched BK with its sequel, taken off Golden Eye and replaced it with DK 64, and called it a day.

And I just played Banjo-Kazooie on XBox Live this summer, the game has aged well, it's still a wonderful litle game. The second one trumps it in about every way, though.

Golden Eye, though? Eh, not so much. Tried playing that this spring. I regretted doing so as it ruined any fond memories I had for the game. ^_^:

The games may look and play similar, but MM and OoT are very different in their own ways. Not as much as the two Mario titles, but Majora's Mask is a much better game than OoT, but to have a top 10 without OoT on it is almost ludicrous, so it had to be that way.

@Sgt Scyther

You also didn't beat that game (OoT) all the way through.

And I have to agree on Banjo. This year is the first time I've ever played the game and I think it's fine, even though I've only played a little bit of it. I've seen/played games that aged worse than Banjo.

You'll have to make me play it eventually but, truthfully, I have more interest in playing Majora's Mask.

I actually think the N64 is the easiest platform to build a Top10.

Also, don't you notice that every generation there were less extreme high-quality Nintendo games?
