GN Version 3.1

“Parents – not retailers or game makers – should be able to decide whether or not their children can play in a world of murder and violence that often degrades women and racial minorities. The video game industry should not be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children. …parents can easily discern if other forms of media are appropriate for their children, whereas violent video games can contain hundreds of hours of footage with the most atrocious, racist, and sexist content often reserved for the highest levels.” - California State Senator Leland Yee

It’s odd, isn’t it? Yee’s statement starts off with something we probably all agree on. We want parents to have the say in what their children play. Then somehow, Yee turns that into a reason as to why games need more regulation. Then he goes on to say that parents cannot judge what’s in a game as easily as they can a movie or CD. How does one know all the content in a movie or CD without viewing/listening? It’s the same with a game, which is why the ESRB is there. If it’s Mature and your child is under 17, they shouldn’t play! From that point on, the parent needs to decide what’s appropriate.
