Dear Reader:
SEGA on the Sonic 4 physics complaints
It’s a minor thing, but having to press forward on the d-pad while moving is a big deal for some gamers. In Sonic 4 this slight change to how the physics were handled was a big deal to long time fans of the series, probably even more so than the color of Sonic’s eyes. Thank goodness they took time out of their day to explain what’s up with the momentum defying hedgehog. Producer Takashi Iizuka said the following.
“In this title, we have not done a straight port of the gameplay [from the Genesis games], but rather updated it with actions which could not be done in the previous titles, like ceiling-running. These changes probably made for a different feel to the longtime Sonic fans. We’re happy for feedback like this, and we’ll make sure we can improve the quality even further in upcoming titles.”
See? They’re going to make everyone happy now. It’s a good thing I’m not a designer on the game. I’d make his legs twice as long as his body out of frustration. Then I’d be all like, “take that fanboys!”
…and there goes my chances of ever becoming a game designer.
