GN Version 3.1

The following comments come from Nintendo’s Hideki Konno…

- hardware teams that worked on 3DS and Wii Fit board were different
- software team was involved early on with 3DS
- the software team’s desires influenced the 3DS hardware team
- Konno, Iwata and Miyamoto had very involved meetings to discuss the direction of the 3DS
- Konno helped to keep the situation under control when these three were meeting up to discuss the direction
- Iwata loves being involved in situations that are tough to tackle
- Miyamoto constantly has ideas, and shares them with everyone as soon as they come into his head
- When Miyamoto shares these ideas, he wants them to be acted upon immediately, which sometimes means staying at work much later than intended
- Nintendo is not satisfied with WiiWare and DSiWare, which is why they’re holding back the 3DS eShop, in order to make it right
- ease of use is a big focus for the eShop
- the separate nature of the Nintendo Channel and Shop Channel on Wii didn’t work out well
- they want consumers to see a game demo, trailer, promo screens and have the ability to buy it right from the same place
- Konno doesn’t want to devalue software, which is what he feels is going on with the App Store
- most 3DSWare games shouldn’t take more than a year to develop
- anything that people do with their free time is competition
- Nintendo wanted to engage, surprise and make consumers happy with the 3DS
- Nintendo wants to maintain the high value of content
- Nintendo won’t be competing with the $1 market
- Nintendo wants to increase th quality of entertainment they provide
- Konno believes that Microsoft and Sony feel the same way
- Konno doesn’t believe you can make a game on as grand a scale as Call of Duty and put it out there for just a buck
- Nintendo has to make back their investment in games, and they don’t see that possible at a $1 price
- Konno says that if he sees a game that interests him, he doesn’t mind paying a reasonable price for it
- Nintendo hopes 3DS tools like the gyrosensor, motion sensor and AR tech will allow third party devs to create new and exciting things
- prior to the DS days, Konno believes that there were many people that had played games but stepped away from them
- Nintendo is always looking to make content that has consumers saying to themselves that this product is right for a purchase
