The early scripts of Super Mario Bros.: The Movie

Could Super Mario Bros. have been adapted into an interesting movie? I think it’s possible, but the movie that we got certainly didn’t accomplish that. The script that was drafted up took some major liberties with the franchise itself, and it didn’t help that the writing was rather poor. Would a different script given us a better fate for the movie?
