Pokémon GO is evolving!
The world of Pokemon GO is always changing, and Niantic is constantly looking to improve and enhance the experience. The team behind the game has just revealed their latest plans for the title, and they’re looking to tweak some social features and change up in-person raids.
Here’s what Niantic detailed today in a new blog post discussing future updates.
- new social features, with some based in a separate Niantic app
- these features will be available in Pokémon GO sometime in the next few months
- social aspects will make it easier to communicate with each other, discover new communities, and enjoy local raid battles
- as of this month, Mega Energy and Rare Candy XL are available as rewards for completing local raid battles
- starting on May 23rd, the shop’s 1 PokéCoin Event Box will no longer include Remote Raid Passes and will instead feature a rotating array of items
Niantic’s own blog shares a few more details on the social features that have been tested in recent months. While we don’t know that all of these features will come to Pokémon GO, we’re sure that at least at few of them will make the transition. The new features may include the following:
- Local #Communities: Easily find other players by creating local communities around you.
- Niantic Friends: Easily add and manage your friends and fellow Agents in Ingress, and across all Niantic titles.
- Direct & Group Messaging: Organize all your chats with friends in one place, and coordinate Field Ops.

Reggie gives business advice, stresses the importance of innovation in gaming
Words of wisdom from a master
In the wake of his newly released book, former Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aimé is making yet another appearance to talk business and the games industry. This time the conversation takes place on Yahoo Finance. Reggie answers questions concerning business owners’ struggles, supply chain issues, and even the Metaverse. See below for a summary of the questions and Reggie’s thoughts.
What words of wisdom Reggie would offer CEOs right now:
Focus on your vision. Focus on the key drivers that you’re looking to push forward in your business, and don’t lose sight of that. Despite all of the noise… you really need to focus on your North Star and drive your organization there. This is the time to take out unnecessary costs and to really make sure that you’re well positioned as all of these pressures begin to ease.
Reggie’s business advice specifically for the gaming industry vs. other industries:
What has historically driven that industry has been innovation. Innovation in gameplay, innovation in content, innovation in delivering that content to consumers in new and different ways. And so, for the gaming sector, the focus has to continue being delivering that innovation.
Certainly the platform holders are struggling with supply chain issues… That has to be another key area focus. Making sure we can get all these devices into the hands of the consumer.
Who Reggie thinks is currently winning the “innovation race”:
One I would call out is FromSoftware. They’ve got a game called Elden Ring that is dominating the popular conversation. They’ve sold just a tremendous number of copies of that software. They are an example of a company that has stayed true to what they are.
I think Epic is doing a fantastic job with the work that they’re doing both in providing development engines to other content makers, as well as the great work that they’re doing with Fortnite.
There’s a lot of great companies doing wonderful work. They tend to be the ones who are driving innovation out in the marketplace.
On the Metaverse and whether or not it will appeal to gamers:
I describe it as a space that is immersive and interactive. A space that has the ability to be modified, but can still be persistent. So imagine walking on the sand and seeing other footprints. That’s an example of where you’re able to modify an environment but it’s persistent. You’ve seen what other people have done. You’ve got your digital identifer that you make out to be quite different than somebody else’s modifier.
These are all things that gamers take for granted. These are all things that are existing in a number of gaming environments today. I do believe that this vision is something that we’re all marching to. I do believe that it’s going to be led by gaming companies. And I do believe that if delivered in a way that is fun, that’s compelling, I do think it’s an experience that people will want to have.
Reggie continues to be someone to look up to in the business world, whether you work specifically with video games or not. You can watch his appearance in full over at Yahoo Finance.
Ex Retro devs recall how Miyamoto influenced Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country Returns
Wise words from the father of modern gaming
Retro Studios were the ones in charge of Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country Returns, but Nintendo very much played a part in development of those games as well. While Nintendo entrusted Retro with these franchises, their dev team still had to create experiences that would get the stamp of approval from Shigeru Miyamoto.
In a snippet from multiple Kiwi Talkz podcast episodes, we get to hear numerous former Retro devs talk about the wisdom Miyamoto imparted on their work with Donkey Kong and Metroid. You can see a round-up of those details below.
- Miyamoto named a dozen things to be fixed after first laying eyes on the prototype for Metroid Prime, and all of his suggestions were spot-on
- Miyamoto particularly said Samus needs to be taller and the world needed to be scaled down
- Miyamoto liked the sound of the ambience in the intro level of Metroid Prime he was shown
- with Donkey Kong Country Returns, Miyamoto told Retro to ‘take care of Donkey Kong,’ and referred to Donkey Kong as his ‘friend’
- Miyamoto was the one who suggested Donkey Kong would blow up dust and dirt in Donkey Kong Country Returns

Netflix's Resident Evil showrunner already has an ending mapped out
Let's just hope it starts out well!
There have been countless great TV shows over the years, but some of them end up fizzling out, rather than maintaining the strong narratives of their earlier years. This comes from a lack of a cohesive story from the start, but apparently with Netflix’s upcoming Resident Evil series, that won’t be the case.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, showrunner Andrew Dabb was asked if there’s a plan cemented for the story of Resident Evil. Thankfully, it very much appears there is.
“The truth of the matter is that we have an ending. And we can progress fast or slow toward that ending. Obviously, the longer we’re on the air, the more stuff fun stuff we can do, and the more things we can bring in. But yeah, I think you have to start this not with an ending carved in stone, because you have to discover ideas along the way. But with an idea of where you’re going with the characters,” Dabb continued. “Not so much with like, you know, what is that liquor number seven gonna be in five years, you know what I mean? But where are these girls gonna be? Where’s Wesker going to be? How did these things work? And you’ll see nods to that, particularly in the future storyline with little hints of things that will happen in the a storyline that are kind of leading into the Z storyline, which is the future storyline. And, and I think it creates a little bit of a … you’ve come out of season one with questions like, ‘Oh, but if they said this, but how do they get from there to there?’ Well, that hopefully will be answered.”
Guild Of Dungeoneering Ultimate Edition now available on Switch
Build the guild
First released for PC way back in 2015, and then receiving a remastered “Ultimate Edition” in 2021, the RPG dungeon crawler Guild Of Dungeoneering has finally made its way to Nintendo Switch. Developed by Gambrinous, the Ultimate Edition of the game is available right now, and is normally $20, but you can get it for just $12 thanks to a limited-time launch discount.
In Guild of Dungeoneering, instead of controlling the hero you build the dungeon around them. Using cards drawn from your Guild decks, you lay down rooms, monsters, traps and of course loot! Meanwhile your hero is making their own decisions on where to go and what to fight. But will they be strong enough to take on the deepest dungeons? In between dungeon runs you manage your Guild, building new rooms to attract new classes of adventurer and expand your decks of cards with more powerful items.
Pokémon Sword and Shield 'Shellder' Max Raid Battle event live
A shell of an opponent
Pokémon Sword and Shield’s next Max Raid Battle event has been announced. The event kicks off tonight and runs until May 22nd, 2022. In this event, Shellder will appear in Max Raid Battles, and Shiny Shellder will also be available.
Max Raid Battles are a multiplayer feature that utilises the Dynamax Feature. In the Wild Area, you’ll often find areas where a Dynamaxed Pokémon can be found. These are often denoted by a red beam of light coming from the den, but if it is one of the rarer Pokémon it’ll have big purple light. This is due to each den pulling two different encounter possibilities: A common set and a rare set.
