Nintendo heir donates $2.5 million to rescue Kyoto canal
The project has long been stalled by lack of city funding
An heir to the late founder of Nintendo is planning on donating 300 million yen, or about $2.48 million USD, to help restore Kyoto’s historic Takase River, a canal built in 1614.
It’s been leaking water due to its age, so the city started restoration work back in 2010. However, due to Kyoto’s fiscal strains, the project stalled.
Thanks to this donation, restoration work should resume soon. It’s currently estimated to be finished by the end of March 2024.
