Just a few days ago, a fan-made remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was making the rounds online. It took the original Game Boy Color version of the game and gave it an HD makeover, complete with a 16:9 aspect ratio and running at 120 frames per second. Not surprisingly, Nintendo wasn’t the biggest fan of this new version of the game, and they wasted no time in having it taken down for copyright infringement.

While you were previously able to acquire the game from itch.io, its former page now results in an error message stating the following: “This game’s files have been suspended for copyright (or trademark) claim.”

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has taken down a fan-made remake of one of their games, and it surely won’t be the last. You can still see a glimpse of what this remake had to offer via its trailer up above. Below, find the official takedown notice from Nintendo themselves.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am an authorized representative of Nintendo of America Inc., owner of the following copyrighted material:

I will never understand why people decide they are going to waste their time and trudge up fake outrage by doing these projects. You already know you will be DMCA'd, many others before you have been DMCA'd, so I have no sympathy for these folks.

Good thing I grabbed this yesterday.

I hate to break it to you, but they knew and planned on this happening. That's why they didn't talk about the project at all until they completed and released it. That was the point. Once it's out there, it can be easily found online regardless of the original source being taken down. They're not looking for sympathy. They finished the project and released it. Mission accomplished.
