It's not just Elon Musk calling someone a pedophile that's the issue or the result of his mockery; it really is how he sees himself.
His Wikipedia page only has a few examples of what he has done, but the last two sentences that have been typed before going into the "Early Life" subsection kind of sum it up.
Musk has stated that the goals of SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity revolve around his vision to change the world and humanity. His goals include reducing global warming through sustainable energy production and consumption, and reducing the risk of human extinction by establishing a human colony on Mars.
He really does see himself as some form of heroic figure and acts as though he's humanity's last hope. But the whole cave rescue fiasco really shows what kind of person he is:
-Musk reasserted on Twitter that the device would have worked and referred to the diver as "pedo guy" without offering any evidence to support the claim, causing backlash against Musk. He subsequently deleted the tweets, along with an earlier tweet in which he told another critic of the device "Stay tuned jackass". On 16 July, the diver stated that he was considering legal action in relation to Musk's comments.
-After Musk's Tweets, Tesla shares fell 4% as some investors worried about his erratic behavior. Tesla investors subsequently demanded that Musk apologize. Two days later, Musk issued an apology for his remarks:
-On August 28, 2018, in response to criticism from a writer on Twitter regarding how Musk had handled the diver's criticism, Musk circled back to the pedophilia accusation
And that's why the joke reads as such. It isn't just about his use of that word, it's all about how Elon Musk is a self-absorbing prick. The word "pedophile" in my comment is directly associated with his "pedo tweet." And it also associates with his ego, his behavior, and seeing himself as the limelight of technological innovation and as a hero above heroes. And with a personality like that, he is perfect for mockery; a genuine form of humor.
