If you tell me your name is Jeffrey, but to call you Jeff, and I solely call you Jeffrey, I'm not respecting what you've asked of me. Similar to this, if someone tells you the name or pronouns they would like you to call them, it's common courtesy to do so.

More extreme example, if you tell me to call you Jeff and I call you a completely different name like Carl or Bobby, it shows a lack of decency to just remember a name. It doesn't have much to do with reminding people they were born and assigned a sex they do not agree with.
