Earlier in the week, we learned that the new Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers movie featured a cameo from none other than ‘Ugly Sonic,’ the version of Sonic that was set to appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie before the major backlash shared by fans. We all thought that design was dead in the water, but it was surprisingly revived for the new Chip n’ Dale film.

Polygon spoke to Director Akiva Schaffer to find out how this Easter egg came to be, and not surprisingly, even he’s surprised it happened.

It’s one of my favorite [cameos in the film]. I can speak to that. It’s one of my favorite things in the movie. And I’m very excited for people to see it … I don’t know what I should, what I’m allowed to say [about it]. I think I will actually plead the fifth.

…It was a process. […] You don’t usually come out of a movie and want to thank the lawyers, but we genuinely owe the Disney lawyers for being team players. [They] super stayed optimistic about it, and really saw the value of the third-party stuff, and they had to really work hard. … It’s easy for me to go, like, Oh, it would be cool if My Little Pony was in the movie, and they’re like, running in the hallways […] but then [the lawyers] have to go call Mattel and pitch them the movie, and tell them it’s not making fun of [the characters], and then I have to get on, and then blah, blah, blah. So it was a process. But you know, it makes [the movie] so much better.

Ugly Sonic is far from the only third party cameo in the film. Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is packed to the brim with nods, winks, and appearances from characters outside of Disney’s collection. You can view them all in the film right now, which is available on Disney+.

It was way more than a cameo. I was surprised just how much he (and so many other companies' characters) were in it.
