Nintendo has put out their latest Corporate Social Responsibility report, which is something they do every year. The report covers four main areas: Consumers, Supply Chain, Employees and Environment. Much of this content has been covered in the past, such as Nintendo’s efforts to help the environment and squash troublesome practices, but this year’s report includes a considerable announcement.

In the employees section of Nintendo’s CSR, we learn that Nintendo is officially recognizing gay domestic partnerships. This might not seem like a big deal at first, but Japan currently doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages from a law standpoint. Nintendo obviously disagrees with this, hence the announcement.

You can see a portion of Nintendo’s CSR pertaining to same-sex relationships below.

We introduced the Partnership System in March 2021 as one initiative based on this philosophy. Although same-sex marriages are not currently recognized under Japanese law, this system ensures employees who are in a domestic partnership with a same-sex partner have the same benefits as employees in an opposite-sex marriage. We have also established that a common-law marriage between couples will be observed in the same way as a legal marriage.

Good on them.

I wonder if this will carry over into Fire Emblem, etc. now!

I love seeing Nintendo do what's right no matter what the law says.

It's really great to see this kind of support coming from Nintendo. I do hope to see this open the door to some more diverse representation in their games.
