(I might go with 'myserious' myself, since back then a lot of the details of the world were still unexplained early on: character motivations and backgrounds, history of the setting, the mechanics of how the major villains came to be. As much as everyone loves the Eclipse and everything leading up, it kind of removed most of the questions readers had about pretty much everything.)
The stuff I actually remember I mostly mentally categorize into three distinct parts. Part 1 was the story of a man who would do anything to get revenge on the guy who ruined his life, Part 2 was elaboration on why/how that guy ruined his life, and Part 3 was the story of a man who would do anything for his mute waifu. From your description, it sounds like things have not changed much since that point.
