Kirby and the Forgotten Land is one of the most important moments in Kirby’s history. It was the first time we got a fully-3D Kirby game, and it took HAL and Nintendo decades to make that happen. There’s no doubt it was a monumental achievement for the franchise, but that doesn’t mean Kirby’s adventures going forward will all be 3D affairs.

“Really, it’s about the kind of gameplay experience that we can provide to the players, and how best to optimally bring that gameplay experience that really dictates how we kind of express that in the game. It’s just that now we have this new genre of 3D as another method, another way, another form of providing that optimal gameplay experience through an optimal Kirby gameplay experience.”

[Kirby director Shinya Kumazaki]

In other words, Kirby fans can look forward to all sorts of unique takes on the character going forward, and those could fall into any number of genres, visual approaches, and more.

The most recent release for Kirby is Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which is an enhanced and updated version of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land for Wii. This isn’t the first remake HAL has tackled, but will there be more in the series’ future? Kumazaki also had some thoughts to share on that as well.

While Kumazaki didn’t share specifics, he did say that HAL’s #1 goal is to always “provide a new gameplay experience.” This obviously applies to new games in the Kirby series, but it matters just as much for remakes as well. HAL won’t set out to remake a Kirby game unless they have some sort of new idea, feature or content they can provide players over what the original release had. We’ve seen that with the Magolor Epilogue in Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, so if another remake comes along down the line, we can expect it to include some fresh content as well.
