Masahiro Sakurai weighs in on the physical/digital debate
The comments on this one are going to be wild...
Masahiro Sakurai is back with another video feature, and this one falls into the ‘Grab Bag’ category. That means it’s not really related to game development at all, but does discuss a gaming-related topic.
This time around, Sakurai weighs in on the physical versus digital game debate. There are ardent supporters on both sides of the argument, and there’s definitely good points to be made on both sides. It’s a discussion that’ll only get more heated as time goes on, which makes it all the more interesting to see Sakurai share his thoughts.
Wondering which side of the fence Sakurai sits on? He definitely shares a definitive answer, but you’ll have to watch the video to find out!

11M agoPersonally I went all on digital this time around on both Switch and Xbox Series X.
Having access to my purchases on future Microsoft consoles I’m not worried about, but Nintendo is another story.
Given the fact they moved from tying purchases from being associated to the console to being associated to the user gives me hope they will continue to carry forward. Having all my games on my Switch at all times is a convenience I’m willing to pay for.

11M agoI'm a "collector", so I love having the games and their boxes. I realize the downsides, though: physical games can be lost or stolen. And as the future progresses, the physical games we buy are more and more broken until they get their "day 1 patch", which won't be something we can download in the future.
However, I've been happy with Steam so I feel like if I'm forced to go all-digital, I could do it.

11M agoI buy digital either if its only possible to get it digitally or if I think the game is worth going digital. I try to get physical for games that I know I want to revisit when I can.
