While the original Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle managed to reach over 10 million players around the world, it seems like the follow-up will have a much tougher time getting close to that number.

According to Videogames Chronicle, Ubisoft has stated that Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope has underperformed against their expectations, and this goes along with overall holiday sales for Ubisoft games, which were “markedly and surprisingly slower than expected.” Ubisoft shared more on Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, saying the slower start for the game was unexpected, especially with “excellent ratings and players’ reception as well as an ambitious marketing plan.”

While things are slow right now, Ubisoft does expect them to pick up going forward. Ubisoft specifically said they believe Sparks of Hope will “do good numbers” as the months roll on. The company didn’t share any specific figures, but hopefully it ends up reaching their expectations.

Hard to know if that’s really bad without knowing what their expectations were. The first one was very successful.

Ubisoft's reputation has been seriously damaged so that's having a trinkle down effect affecting sales across the board. Between the scandal, predatory microtransactions from chasing the EA model for games, game delays, and now game cancellations, Ubi is in a position to be bought out including in a hostile takeover.

tl;dr - Karma is coming back on Ubi big time.

Sparks of Hope might evergreen on the Mario name, but I don't see Nintendo allowing a third game because of what's happening at Ubi. Especially since what if Ubi is bought out and the new owners take them to non-Nintendo platforms only in the future?

Ubi has damaged much of its IP and chased off the guy responsible for some of them.

Ubisoft games have historically had steep price cuts within a year of release. People may be banking on that anymore for Ubisoft games that they're interested in but don't need to play now, which is affecting new game sales. That was going to be my plan with Sparks of Hope - pick it up when it's ~$30.
