Sonic co-creator shows more concept art of how Sonic came to be
Sonic's destiny was written in the Stars
Most SEGA fans know that Sonic the Hedgehog started out very different before the devs settled on the blue blur that we know and love. A lot of characters and ideas were tossed around before Sonic came into play, and today brings us a look at some concept art showing off the franchise’s earliest days.
Sonic’s designer and co-creator, Naoto Ohshima, has shared a tweet featuring concept art from the time before Sonic’s ideas were cemented. According to Ohshima, the original idea for Sonic started as a game called Twin Stars, where twin brothers would protect the world from an evil force.
As you can see, pretty much everything was different from what would eventually pop up in Sonic. The enemies have completely unique designs, the main bad guy is nothing like Eggman, but one of the henchmen in artwork shows the infamous evil-doer with a completely different color scheme. In other words, the big baddie from Twin Stars got squashed, and Eggman took the spotlight!
