Lead up to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, much had been said about the changes to Hyrule and the new sky areas above. What we didn’t really hear about was the secrets waiting underground, which turns out to be the most expansive new area in the game.

Waiting underneath Hyrule is The Depths, a sprawling area that’s sparsely lit and filled with danger. In an interview with Wired, Tears of the Kingdom Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi opened up on The Depths and shared the team’s aim when creating this unique location.

When you look at the sky, it’s open, it’s bright. When you look at The Depths, it’s a little bit scary, but it’s really about driving this sense of adventure. There’s so many secrets hidden there waiting to be unearthed, treasures and whatnot. It’s really about making sure that we provide an area where players can get really into the spirit of adventuring and exploring. And also as they gain strength, as they become more powerful, they expand their scope of where they can explore.
