Thirsty Suitors is a unique turn based RPG about trying to manage life and relationships as a South Asian immigrant. While it’s doing a lot of brand new things, it also took some inspiration from a game familiar to Nintendo fans! In an interview with Eurogamer, creative director Chandana Ekanayake explains how the turn-based combat sequences were initially influenced by those of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

“I really liked how that system felt. And we started with that. But then, as we sort of figured out the story, and the characters and sort of the mood system, it definitely went its own way, which we’re happy about. It feels like a fresh perspective due to the narrative of the game.”

Ekanayake also cites Sayonara: Wild Hearts as another game with some similarities in gameplay systems. All three titles use some form of timing, or rhythm/music based gameplay to convey mechanical or narrative ideas.

The Paper Mario series may have gone in different directions for its later entries, but it’s always nice to see modern games taking influence from its original designs.
