Today must be a very special day for Masahiro Sakurai. While many gamers know Sakurai as the man behind the Smash Bros. series, he was also the creator of another iconic character/franchise; Kirby.

April 27th, 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Kirby, and it’s no surprise to see Sakurai take to Twitter to share some thoughts on the special date. You can see a translation of Sakurai’s statement below, courtesy of PushDustIn.

Kirby’s Dream Land (GB) is celebrating its 30th birthday today. I hope that you all have fun playing it!

This game (Kirby’s Dream Land) introduced the Kirby Dance. I asked the sound director how many frames the song would last, and they told me they didn’t know.

While Google’s translation certainly muddies the waters, it’s clear that even 30 years ago, Sakurai was working extra hard to create something special. Kirby may have had rather humble beginnings on the Game Boy, but that solid first outing paved the way for a franchise that continues to reach new heights 30 years later.
