This week’s Nintendo Direct revealed that Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was getting a remaster for the Switch, and it’s set for release in 2023. This Wii-era Fatal Frame never saw localization back in the day, but fans around the world will soon get a chance to give the game a go.

Wondering why now’s the time for Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse to return? According to the Fatal Frame dev team, we can thank ourselves for making it happen. It turns out the success of FATAL FRAME: Maiden of Black Water paved the way for this remaster. You can see the team’s full comments on the matter below.

Last year, the Fatal Frame series had its 20th anniversary. We had numerous considerations on what we could do to all the fans who have supported us up until then. As a result, we released a remaster of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.

After some time passed from the release, it gathered much attention from everyone, and we received various kinds of opinions. We actually feel glad that people around the world hope to see a sequel and [other] series titles get released.

There are also people who started playing Fatal Frame with Maiden of Black Water, so we have the desire to convey more of the appeals from Japanese-style horror games. We decided to remaster and release Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, which was also requested a lot. It will take a bit more time until release, but we are currently developing it, so please wait until the release.

I Don't know how they can call this a remaster considering the game runs worse than the W Urine original one and completely miss surround sound (it was also omitted in the PS4 and PC versions!). I hope these micro loading stutters won't plague Mask of the Lunar Eclipse this time! The Wii original version was encoded with Dolby Pro Logic II, I truly hope surround compatibility won't be forgotten this time!

Maybe this time we'll get a worldwide physical release and I don't have to import again.
