Square-Enix recognizes interest in Dragon Quest localizations, tells fans to keep speaking up

Coming from a Polygon interview with Dragon Quest series executive producer Yuu Miyake...

"We want to get them out here. We really do! The Dragon Quest games are very text-heavy, so the time and the cost it takes to localize these and do it well is quite something. Business-wise, we have to think quite hard whether we'll make that money back from localizing to North America. It's always been a difficult decision. But the more you tell us, the louder the voices, the more likely we are to do it."

Well, at least they acknowledge that people want the game to come outside of Japan..

If the better half of 12 years of Western DQ fans pleading SE for localization isn't enough yet, I wonder what it'll be for them.

I'm still 75% positive we won't get Theathrhythm Dragon Quest, either...

Dragon Quest VIII is a masterpiece. I first tried it about a month ago on the PS2 and everything still holds up very well and the graphics are among the best on the system. On the 3DS it would be a quick sell for me and I'm not even that into RPGs but this particular one is the first one to suck me in since Final Fantasy IX.

But they're already translated, it's not like they have to do everything from scratch. I'm not saying localization is just translation, but that's some big work already done.

I really hope at least DQVIII makes it over here, I'd love to play that game on 3DS.

This is why I'm left scratching my head... unless the scripts in the newer games underwent some really heavy changes that make it much more difficult than reusing the already translated text?

I know that the series isn't a heavy hitter in North America, but it seems logical that it could still be profitable enough to make it worth the effort, even if they went digital only. I don't know... maybe I'm just wrong on that.

I think VII has some significant changes, making it impossible to just re-use the PSX script for the most part.
VIII I've heard doesn't have that problem, so maybe we can get that one, in the least.

Releasing the older ones on the VC would be a good start. It would gain interest in the series on the Wii U in the west and would be great for nostalgic fans like myself.

Someone should tell them not to put those stupid accents in them anymore.

Amigo! You no like it when my peeple speek like thees? Ay, seƱor...

The accents are stupid. So stupid they're great. Give me over-the-top accents or give me death. I'm Latino and found them humorous and harmless.

I just want DQVII, but it'd be fantastic if they could do both. I also am puzzled by the localization statement. I imagine that DQVII would undergo bigger script changes for the sake of modernization, but DQVIII's script probably still holds up, I'm sure. I played that one three or four years ago and it still remains my favourite in the series.

I absolutley agree! I love the accents and think it gives a lot af flavor and charm to the game's script.

They may have went a little overboard with IV though...

As for VII's script, I believe that it was unfinished to begin with, and it doesn't match the style of modern DQ localizations. There is also the fact that VII's script is humoungous, and that made changes for the remake, AND they would practically have to redo it from scratch anyway.

Operation Horii go!!!!!!

What about Theatrhythm Dragon Quest? That isn't nearly as text heavy as VII and VIII, so they could use that to test the waters.

Been asking for Rocket Slime 3 since it came out in Japan... You not listening SE!
