If Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash sells poorly, it could be the character's last game, says Nintendo

Coming from a Verge interview with Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe...

"To be honest, this might be the last chance for us. I’ve continually thought about ways to build this into a mainstream success," Tanabe says of the franchise. "We’ve challenged ourselves in assorted ways along those lines, but I can’t say that we’ve found the answer yet.

The first thing we decided upon was that we’d make an action game that took advantage of his plug and cord. We then placed the core of the gameplay on using it like a grappling hook, throwing it into a faraway edge and using that to traverse gaps and so on. As we kept thinking about ideas, we naturally settled on the 2D side-scrolling format. If the character can gain more recognition, I believe we’ll have a chance to produce another adventure-style game for a large number of people. I’m hoping that we made the right choice for this game’s play style."

Tanabe also seems open to the idea of Chibi-Robo popping up in Smash Bros....

"If we receive an offer, we'll think about it."

I think going 2-D style is nice take for the portable offering. I'm more used to seeing the series in a 3-D environment. At least this time, a Chibi-Robo game isn't exclusive to a single retailer.

Its got an Amiibo behind it, it'll be fine.

People on the r/amiibo subreddit are furious and are cancelling their orders because the box with the game can't be hung up.

A lot of idiots are importing the solo figure, solely because of the box.

So stupid.

Jeez, does EVERYTHING have to be a "mainstream success" now? Is it not acceptable just to have the occasional game simply break even, fill a niche, and please fans?

Also, another "buy this or we stop making games for the whole series" story? T_T;

Yes. Yes it does.

Hence the similar threats on Fire Emblem, Metroid, and anything else that's gotten this crap in the last few years.

well they have given him a fair number of game, if it doesn't work, it just doesn't. oh sakurai why don't you help the poor fellow ? why didn''t rob appear in that game and vice versa.

If you don't buy this game, we can't be friends.

I guess that explains the move to sidescroller.

I hate Nintendo's (Miyamoto's?) threat garbage. It's not like they'd stop making Zelda or Mario if one sold poorly.

Well Mario and Zelda games have a history of good sales, there is still no chibi robo game that has managed to achieve great sales.

Why are you accusing Miyamoto of threats? First of all this is not Miyamoto talking and also this is not a threat, the developers clearly feel like they are beating on a dead horse.

Imo Zip Lash is a very uninteresting game, it's just another 2d platformer and I don't expect it to do well. I would much rather have another proper chibi robo game.

First, I mean (and I know I said "one") if Mario or Zelda started taking a dip or something. I know Chibi Robo is a consistent low seller and they are the opposite. But look at Fire Emblem. They were going to end that, and that had done really well up until, what, the last 3 games before Awakening?

As for Miyamoto, I put it in parenthesis with a question mark. In case you missed it, this is NOT the first game that they've done this. Like I said, if Fire Emblem Awakening did bad, they were going to stop it. Miyamoto personally said that if Star Fox 64 3D sold poorly, he'd put an end to Star Fox games. That is what I am referencing. I was being broader than this game, and just the consistent "if this fails, no more for you" stuff.

And it is an unintentional threat. It's a guilt trip. "If this game does poorly, we may not make another one". It's not direct, but they're basically saying "if you don't buy this, you can kiss the series goodbye". So this creates an issue where people not interested in this game in particular feel guilted into having to buy.support a game they don't want, just so they can one day, maybe, get the one they do want.

See that's the problem. You want another unique & proper Chibi Robo. However, if you don't buy this, that may never happen.

That said, platformer or not, it' more unique than something like Mario or DKC. It's in line with Kirby's more inventive games, with the whole plug thing.

Fire Emblem sales were getting lower and lower. But on FE, I am pretty sure that we heard the story that awakening would be the last one in the series if it tanked, after it had been a huge success.

You might take it as a threat, but if they did not come out and say it then you would be accusing them of "letting another series die" and "not communicating with the fans". It is harsh, but it is the truth, no developer will keep pushing a series down the fans throats until they buy it forever. They have shown enough patience with chibi robo and to me zip lash looks like a desperate attempt to get him some fan recognition.

Honestly if the next Zelda bombs, I do expect them to think twice before doing another expensive Zelda game.

This proves that Nintendo has no respect for its franchises!

Good lord, are we really becoming this! Nintendo's one of the few still out there that take care their franchises but they are still a business and once a business-like comment comes out Bam! people use that as fuel for their anger.
Fire Emblem had the same problem and they did fine cause the devs put so much into Awakening, sure franchises like custom Robo and Glory of Hercules were left on hold but that's just how games work, if less and less people buy the next installment then the games are not going to make there money back.

Well, just look at the outrage for Chris Pranger's comments on translations and how changing "Dolls" into "Skells" seemingly ruined a game.

I feel like Chibi Robo is one of those franchises that Nintendo has tried to force to be popular since it's creation but it's simply never caught on. I don't really get their love for the franchise.

The 1st 3DS game has sssoo much potential.... maybe if they made it more addictive, and added more things to do, it would be great... Like... build on that concept, don't make it a dull 2D platformer.

It's a 2D platformer, if it reviews well it'll do fine.

I'm not sure why they have franchise expectations for this character. I looks like the kind of character that would get a game on Sega Genesis but never come around again for the rest time. Like Dymamite Headdy or something like that

Buy, buy...or I'll die!

Meh, It's got an amiibo behind it, It's already guaranteed to sell more than Codename S.T.E.A.M. :P
As for the comments, Honestly it isn't a franchise many people outside hardcore Nintendo fans know about, and Nintendo isn't Capcom/Konami with their sales requirements.
I'd love Chibi-Robo to continue, but I guess that ultimately depends on how much advertising they give to the game, seeing its lack of notoriety.

Buy our generic 2D platformer take on Chibi Robo, or you won't get any more Chibi Robo!

Wait.... to be honest, if this is the future of Chibi Robo, then I don't want any more, so whatever.

Poor Yoma ;(
Wish I could do something for you.

Chibi Robo Zip Lash is looking to be the best Castlevania to come out in a long while. Along with Mii Force taking up the Gradius torch, it looks like Nintendo is giving their gamers what Konami should have been.
