Nintendo comments on Fire Emblem Fates localization changes, same-sex marriage retained

Coming from Nintendo...

“Making changes is not unusual when we localize games, and we have indeed made changes in these games. When we localize a game we do so in order to make it appropriate for that particular territory. All our choices were made from that point of view.”

“In the Conquest edition a male main character created by the gamer can pair up with another male character (Niles) which ultimately leads to marriage. Similarly, in the Birthright edition, a female main character created by the gamer can pair up with and eventually marry another female character (Rhajat). Like married couples of the opposite gender, these same-sex couples enjoy the stat boosts that come with marriage, which means when they are paired up in battle they are stronger than when they are apart or paired up with another character.”

“In the third edition, Revelation, that will be released as DLC in the eShop on March 10, a same-sex marriage is possible regardless of the sex of your main character, as both Niles and Rhajat can be encountered in this edition.”

Just as it's been for the past 30 years. Except lately they've been more open to potentially risque content; not less (as a cursory look through their ESRB listings can tell you).

Yeah, people always forget how much more lenient they are these days every time they feel the need to step in.

For every censored thing, they have a couple other things they let slide by that they never did in the early days.

Not everything flies, oh well.

As long as no one gets an ugly and crudely drawn curtain added over their swimsuit bottom, which was actually much less revealing than their actual in game and in costume cutscene, ironically, I'll be happy.

As long as Camilla, the beach DLC and the face rubbing mini-game are left intact than I'm okay with changing the dialogue.

That conversation was terrible, so I'm glad they got rid of it. Just completely ill-conceived. But hey, for what it's worth, I'm glad to see some progressiveness by offering same sex relationships.

Is the gameplay still intact? Yes? OK, then don't care.

WE got the same sex marriage this time, so progress. I'm OK with what nonsense they got rid of.

After reading this, I'm so happy! Nintendo did great to make things good for the players. I'm going to enjoy all of the versions of FE!

Awesome.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Glad to see this.

I'm not opposed to the changes they made regarding the scene with the 'magic potion'. I'm okay with it.

But not having same sex marriage would have been a terrible, terrible mistake.
I'm so glad they kept it.

So much hypocrisy coming from the "all censorship is bad" side on this one.
If all censorship is bad, then so is the deletion of this "sensitive scene" regarding the potion.

As for me personally, I'm a case-by-case kind of person, but this being taken out or kept in wouldn't have influenced my purchase decision in either case.

I'm all about, all censorship is bad, (with in legal re-met) and I have no problem with the magic potion storyline, granted it's goofy, but that's as far as I think it goes. But people complaining about that, and saying that all censorship is bad, are not about, All censorship is bad. They're just hypocrites.

It would be funny to see marriage giving negative stats.

Because that's what happens... People get fat and angry after marriage. Their lifes are all ruined.

I remember reading that instead of children, your characters get special stat boosts for getting gay married.

Gays are superheroes confirmed.

I'm pretty sure I read that you have children normally and they inherit skills and stuff just like the rest.

I'm gonna have to check on that later.

"Congratulations! Your gay characters brace the Power of Love and become better persons when the others get annoying and expensive children ruining their lives!!"

Haha that would be the best thing ever if true ^^
