I think many customers probably are looking at this game like Temple Run, or angry birds. That is, they expect this to be SMR 1, and for Nintendo to later launch a SMR2. Could be why people are so against the price.

If Nintendo made it more clear that they plan to continue supporting the app with (free after the one time payment) additional content, they could make more sales.

Yeah, but Nintendo is definitely planning SMR 2 as well, they've already talked about sequels.

I do think free DLC would help, as well as different price ranges.
