Xbox head - Nintendo relationship is "incredibly strong", "would love" to bring Achievements to Minecraft on Switch

Coming from Xbox head Phil Spencer when asked if players can earn Achievements...

"I don't know yet. I'm guessing no. And this is a collaborative relationship between Nintendo and I; they don't have Achievements on their platform. If they want us to, I would love to be able to do it... The relationship with Nintendo is incredibly strong. We obviously did the Mario mash-up pack into Minecraft; that doesn't happen that often."

It is weird Microsoft is giving Nintendo more support than most third party. 2017 is just the weird year. But at least metroid prime 4 is coming.

Maybe Phil Spencer can send us gold stars in the post so we can at least show people irl how accomplished we are at Minecraft

I really don't know what to think, but I like it.

...I wish I had more to say, but I'm somewhat speechless about this whole thing.

good for the xbox chief.

only way these stupid console wars will finally die is with sentiments like this. i hope nintendo follows suit.

You know, if you really think about it, Microsoft breaking out even further support for switch would make a lot of sense. The Switch is definitely carving out a niche as a supplementary system and with Microsoft chasing 4k, Nintendo doesn't serve as direct competition for the same market demographic. It might actually benefit Microsoft to promote their brand and IP by releasing some games for Seitch. Likely they wouldn't drop marquee titles, but imagine maybe they port something like Halo 3 over to cross promote a Halo 6 release pushing the concept as something like:

"Love this game? See the newest Halo in 4K on Xbox One X"

It actually makes logistical sense, considering Microsoft's diminishing market presence this gen comparative to Sony and the appearance that Microsoft seems to be headed to move away from consoles and integrate the Xbox brand into either PC or a cloud based service and I think Nintendo seems to be an ideal potential partner if you really start to think about it.

I'm curious... just how is the XBox One doing? I recall the original XBox was a financial failure... and the 360 was the same until about halfway through its existence... but I know nothing about the One.

It started strong but is being ripped to shreds by the ps4. It's sitting pretty at around 29million units or So, but the ps4 is at around 60....so basically 2:1 sales.

It also dropped off considerably before the S model released and then again right after.

They are playing nice this gen. It's really making me think about being more of an Xbox person. Sony won't even allow cross platform play with Nintendo and some of the "rumors" around monster Hunter world are outrageous. I can only hope they aren't true.

I need a PS4 for those exclusves, though. Last Guardian and Nier: A (the last one is a must-hae for me).

Just wrote in another thread that we must treat rumours as rumours. With that said, we can speculate, of course, and we know Sony really wants to win back Japan which is 3DS country these days and are trying to cripple Nintendo's and Capcom's relationship to do that? Don't know. Sounds far fetched, but let us not fortget that Ninty and Sony do have plenty of beef after the 90's fiasco.

Wonder what the gaming world would look like if they had worked together (and the contract was clean with no back doors :D )

I own a ps4 as well. I just think that they've been sitting at the top doing nothing but pushing people away. I'm not into that.

Nothing's stopping them really. They (achievements) wouldn't be system-wide (unless they tied them to the xbl account you need for realms support) but they could be implemented game-only. Kind of like Disgaea 5 does with their "Trophies".

As long as we can turn em off.

Exactly! I started hating avhievments the first time they ruined my time with Bioshock.

OK. In games like Minecraft and Rocket League, it might not be as annoying, but I still don't want that message popping up in-game to ruin the fluidity of my gaming.

You know what I say at this point? Friggin' do it up. I am more than happy to see Nintendo and Microsoft get buddy-buddy if they want to, and if Sony wants to finally pull the Stick of Arroganceā„¢ out of their ass and join in, so much the better.

It's time to bury this damn hatchet.
