WhatsApp product designer praises Switch user interface for its "bare bones simplicity"

The following comes from Charlie Deets, product designer at WhatsApp

I’ve been using the Switch for a few months and I can’t stop thinking about its user interface. Nintendo’s newest console is in the golden era of its UI. The base features you would expect out of a game system are covered, but cruft has not yet been added to the experience. I’ve heard a lot of people say they long for more from the Switch’s UI, but I love the bare bones simplicity.

This is just a small snippet from a massive breakdown of the Switch UI from Mr. Deets. It's really a wonderful article and well worth your time. Check out the full post here.

I agree, I like the Switch's interface better than the Wii U, Wii and 3DS's UI. I just wish they would add themes so we could had colour and music to it!

I too like the minimalist approach this time around. I only wish the eShop were more interesting. That sucker is boring!

Agreed. There are features that I want to come to the system of course (some that will and some that might not,) but I really like the simplicity, ease-of-use, and speed of the current set-up.

It's by no means perfect, but it's definitely on the right track!

"I just wish they'll add themes to it so it would be just the same as the 3DS UI."

I don't have a Switch yet, but I can't deny while I loved WiiU, the interface was ridiculous and convoluted. Glad Ninty learned their lesson with this one.

"The base features you would expect out of a game system are covered, but cruft has not yet been added to the experience"

So an account system providing easy license transfer to another system you log into, cloud saves, integrated voice chat, and color options other than "white or black" are "cruft" and not a base features that all other systems seem to have no trouble integrating into their base UI?

Yes .

too bad the console lacks the features that have been present on other consoles for aaages (that would convolute things) and there is hardly any customization so a hard lesson in minimalism.

...not my cup of tea.

To each their own. I find the Switch UI to be ATROCIOUS. I genuinely hate it. The only thing I didn't like about the Wii U UI was that everthing was in a 'channel' form rather than just games. Other than that I don't see how it was complex... a big list of boxes that you tap on. The end.

Plus I have to throw out that the eShop is terrible. I genuinely didn't think you could get worse than the WiiU/3DS eShop but this is one is even more of a crypt. It is extremely difficult to just explore games without either searching for one or seeing it in the just released category. I pity the indie devs who will get eternally buried.

I actually loved the Wii U's UI more, it was a bit more playful. Also it gave you control over icon placement and had folders for games (after a few updates). The ONLY advantage of the Switch's UI is that it's really snappy and extremely fast.

Truly, if they'd given the Switch a Wii U like UI but with the snappiness of the Switch, I'd be in heaven Smile

(Saying this doesn't mean I dislike the Switch's UI, it's absolutely one of the best. A LOT better than the XBOX ONE UI, or even the PS4 UI.)

I love the barebones UI of the Switch to. So simple to use.
