RUMOR - Latest Wii U firmware update points to the end of Miiverse

Apparently the line of text above was added as part of the latest Wii U firmware update. The service hasn't ended yet, but it's clear Nintendo is going to make the move fairly soon. A wonderful Wii U feature we'll certainly be sad to go. Thanks to T27Duck for hte heads up.

Why even get rid of it? I never understood why the Switch didn't have Miiverse. I never used it much on Wii U or 3DS, but the few times I did it seemed like a cool way to interact with others about a certain game and to see neat drawings.

This should be an interesting comments section

Bring back Nintendo TVii.
Also replace Miiverse with a snapshot button on 3DS and Wii U

I wonder what this means for the future of the 3DS. Will they shut down Miiverse while there are still 3DS games left to be released?

Might be a similar case to the GameSpy servers that ran the old WiFi connection.

I'm hoping it's a case similar to that, it's way too soon otherwise.

Nintendo probably doesn't want to continue allocating resources towards moderating all those posts.

Or it could be 3DS and Wii U are fully hacked and Nintendo can't stop all the hacked posts on Miiverse. So once again hackers and homebrewers are why we can't have nice things anymore.

Hell people only hacked for region free and they still hacked the Switch (not fully and even with Switch being region free). Perhaps that's why Switch's features are bare bones. Hackers. As they've shown, Nintendo can't give an inch or they'll take a mile out of them.

A Youtuber by the name of Arlo (I believe) theorized that the main reason why Nintendo opted not to include Miiverse on the Switch was because it was kind of redundant as a social media platform as the only folks who'd see the posts were Nintendo console owners.

It's just so much more beneficial for Nintendo to take advantage of existing social media networks where shared content could cross paths with non-Nintendo fans and hopefully pull them in.

Cant say I disagree with the idea, but like most charming Nintendo endeavors, it would be the end of an era (for better or for worse).

Surely it's costly to run a department of moderators for a service that's not making them any money.

And I think you demonstrated the problem right there. "..the few times I did.."
While it was a great idea, it was always very clunky to get into, and interrupted gameplay by many minutes. The beauty of the Switch implementation of screenshots is that you press a button and you have the screenshot saved. Boom.
I feel Miiverse was great because of the delay due to the fact that you're still in the gaming moment when posting. There's no posting after the fact, far as I know. Your brain is still in the game, and you're expressing what you felt at the very moment.
While that's cool, it also could break you out of the game. And if you wanted a simple screenshot, you can't just save the screenshot and call it a day.
Were it faster to get to, I believe it could have been better. While I imagine the Switch would have sped it up, unfortunately, it seems Nintendo may not believe it has staying power in their new vision.

I lament the loss and at the same time welcome Nintendo's decision.

I never used it much on Wii U or 3DS

You answered your own question.

Clearly the return on investment for Nintendo isn't worth keeping the service alive.

*enhancement of user experience intensifies*

A pity, Miiverse was actually a decent social network, especially with all the cool drawings

I would like everyone to know that the games affected by this are Splatoon (being replaced by Splatoon 2), Mario Kart 8 (Replaced by Deluxe).

And Super Mario Maker which... has no replacements. Bye bye Level Sharing.

And I am still mad there's no way to talk to friends on Switch. One of my Wii U friends who I haven't talked to online since 2014 added me on Switch and I'm dying to talk to him after so long but because Nintendo won't make a swapnote for Switch i can't, which makes me really sad and upset. D: there's NO reason to not have at least a friend only network like Miiverse... and I loved sharing hi-scores/good moments from games on there

Really like Miiverse, still use it as I only own WiiU/3DS. Will be missed.

Sad to see it go. But it spiraled way out of what Nintendo had intended. I myself haven't used the service in well over a year now.

It's kinda of funny, I've been working on a project for almost 2 years now that owes it's existence to Miiverse.

It could also just be the Wii U side of Miiverse ending and not the 3DS side of Miiverse, since the 3DS is still being supported unlike the Wii U.

Apparently, Shiny Quagsire's tweet about Miiverse shutting down was a joke tweet.

Will this effect 3DS?

I doubt it happens soon with Mario Maker still going. Maybe after a switch version of it.

Revamp it. It's a really good idea. The thing that killed it for me on the 3DS though was that it takes like 60 seconds to get into. Shave that down to 15 and you've got a winner.

Aw I loved miiverse :/ only way to contact the friends I made on there who I'll never get to communicate with again after it closes down, seeing my friends post who passed away in 2013... loved seeing the innocent posts I made at the beginning of my current relationship T_T rip memories..

You should probably screen cap those, even if Miiverse isn't shutting down in the near future. Because it will eventually. That way you can keep those memories safe.

Damn it, no...

God, what a waste.

It's sad to see it go....if it was true and nothing from Nintendo has indicated that today would be the day it's ending. It may end soon so start exchanging Twitters and emails and text if you need to stay in touch with people.

I dont wanna believe this... Miiverse was great idea, and this would mean...
No level sharing in Mario maker via this network, no drawings, no bottles in windwaker, and no comments in warawara plaza?

Please be this just a rumor.

Miiverse is better than Facebook, from my gaming view.
For Facebook have to many complain comments like "I can't buy a NES mini, Nintendoom" or empty Name posts for exemple.

But the best thing with Miiverse is that you know IF people have played the game or not, so peoples LOVE/HATE posts can be debunked as TRUE or FALSE right away.
And most people are gamers that I can talk/ask to and not random none-gamers who don't know what they are talking about.

Feel like I have had my best gaming talk at Miiverse, for while GoNintendo is a very nice place, we are still a little bit fanboyism here for Nintendo and therefore HATE to much at stuff like Metroid: Other M, or LOVE to much at stuff like Metroid Prime 4 picture.

Just want a GAMING Facebook where you talk everthing gaming in you real name and not like Neogaf anonymous names!

If that's the case, that's really too bad.

I like Miiverse, It was nice to get game help, share accomplishments, and see other people's drawings. Some of the latter were incredible.

The bad part was people "claiming ownership" of game pages, some of the Smash Bros meme photos were incredibly annoying, and the young teen dating site attempts... folks, take that to Facebook or Twitter.

Still, it had more good than bad, and after 4 months of no UI on Switch with not even a hint of when it actually will arrive is going to make me miss Miiverse even more when it actually is pulled.

miiverse was a poor man's twitter with very limited options. I've personally used it very few times but it is sad for supporters to see it go. That was the one weird thing nintendo had over the competition (and now they got nothing). Just missed the mark by not including achievements so that everyone could see EXACTLY which games each user has played.

streetpass on the other hand was just wrong to not include it on the switch. Sure the last batch of games was poor (played them all) but the concept of walking that gives you a currency to use on games was brilliant. Love it when nintendo makes backward moves...

Makes sense. Nintendo's use for social media is to spread the word, share and promote the brand, gain market share, etc.

Miiverse doesn't do that. If you're on Miiverse then you've already bought the product - it really doesn't add value to Nintendo.

Someone on Reddit noted that a similar message was added in a Wii firmware update years before it actually shut down. There's a possibility it's just added ahead of time once again for its eventual shut down.

Miiverse was/is VERY useful for asking questions about games, to get help. I was LOVING using it so much more than guides because it just felt so much more... social. It sometimes started small but fun conversations.
