Dragon Quest XI PS4 sales trending better than 3DS

This comes from a transcript of Square Enix's financial call...

On July 29, we released “DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age,” which has generated a great customer response and garnered praise for its contents. We have seen stronger sales of the PlayStation®4 version than the NINTENDO 3DS version, but given the installed base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the NINTENDO 3DS version going forward as well.

Q: Do you look likely to reach your target for unit sales of “DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age?” Also, you say that you are seeing strong sales of the PlayStation®4 version, which has a high sales price. Does that mean we can expect sales to beat your plan?

A: We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that that will depend on how sales of the NINTENDO 3DS version trend going forward.

This transcript comes from Aug. 4th, so the situation may have changed a bit since then. Also remember, Dragon Quest XI is heading to NA/EU, but we don't know if both versions will be localized. Finally, Media-Create sales data had 3DS above PS4.

01./01. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age # (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} (¥5.980) - 307.714 / 1.456.601 (-73%)
02./02. [PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age # (Square Enix) {2017.07.29} (¥8.980) - 200.798 / 1.151.113 (-79%)

Odd... maybe the sales they are talking about are sales to stores, not sell through. Which would make sense as I would imagine shop owners would be hesistant to buy heaps of new 3DS game units with the Switch out.

I'm thinking that they mean money generated. With the cost of the PS4 version being 50% higher, $60 vs $40 (or a similar yen equilivent)

This is really confusing...maybe they are talking attach rate since there are 4 times as many 3DS systems sold in Japan?

Maybe they're including digital sales. I could see the PS4 selling far more digital copies than the 3DS.

He said the % of digital sales is lower than western %, which hover around 20-30% from what we know.
If we say 3DS got ~10% digital, PS4 would need 30% digital to beat 3DS in units sold.
They were probably speaking in term of revenue, in term of sell-through (PS4 beat 3DS on that front) OR in term of % of the install base buying it. There's a lot of other ways to evaluate the success of a game than unit sold. In fact, movies are 100% evaluated on their revenue, which is, in the end, the most important value to watch. (It also help that Cinema tickets are usually the same price everywhere [if we forget VIP and 3D], so tickets sold and revenue is pretty close if you divide revenue by the price of tickets, while games have different prices depending on the game).

Maybe the PS4 version is the better one.

In terms of the obvious (graphics) yes, but the 3DS version has more content that the PS4 version doesn't have. But the PS4 version looks pretty nice so I can see why people would get that one. A lot of Japanese also bought both versions. Regardless, the 3DS version will (and current is) sell better in the long run just not as much as Square Enix expected it would.

Graphics are important to gamers. Always will be. I would also have gone for the PS4 version easily. But still waiting for that Switch version if it ever shows up.

But still waiting for that Switch version if it ever shows up.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of Japanese gamers are doing the same, hence the underwhelming 3DS numbers.

Yeah. Thay could truly be the case. Good thinkin'.

Really weird story. Is this translated from the japanese? There is a possibility that this translation again is faulty or that the true meaning is lost in translation. From what we read so far, they are a little disappointed by the 3DS sales. Maybe they expected more sales because of the much higher install base. Complaining sure is on a very high note sine the 3DS version is performing great. But yes, the PlayStation 4 became the fastest selling PlayStation 4 Game and is one of the very very few reaching over a million sold copies. Final Fantasy XV needed much time for the milestone. Combining the fact that the PlayStation 4 version is selling at a much higher price, the statement of Square Enix becomes more plausible.

You know it's a bad presser, when 5 out of the 7 comments above me use the word 'maybe' to try and decipher it.

Clarity would be helpful here.

1.5 million+ is nothing to sneeze at considering most games struggle to even get pass 200k over there. Wonder how much they're expecting to get out of the 3DS version. Probably won't get DQ IX numbers if that's what they're expecting.

I think they're saying relative to expectations, the PS4 game is trending better than expected, and perhaps the 3DS is trending worse than expected given its huge install base. That I can see. Otherwise the 3DS version is selling better and that isn't going to be changing any time soon in JP.
