Nintendo World Championships 2017 - live blog (completed)

The following blog will bring you the results and other highlights of the Nintendo World Championships 2017. Be sure to refresh the blog regularly for updates!


- The show opens with a message from Reggie Fils-Aime (video here)

- Stage 1 is three games. The first game is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You will have to ride a shield to the best of your abilities. The fastest time down the mountain. Three attempts. First ranked player receives 24 points, second 23 points ect.

- After first round: 1. Cole G, 2. Dan S and 3. Thomas G

- The second game is the Home Run Contest in Smash Bros. for Wii U. Two attempts each to get as far as possible. Fouls count as zero points

- The second round results: 1. Tubooron, 2. Asa, 3. John Numbers

- The third game is Metroid: Samus Returns. Fight the Diggernaut boss sequence and survive. Players have six minutes. 24 points for under 3 min, 12 for under 6 min, 0 points if you don't make it

- After the third round: 1. 360Chrism, 2. Kyle W, 3. Tubooron

- Bottom eight are now moving to the Underground, only the best two will survive

- Underground Stage 1 is Balloon Fight. Players compete in the Balloon Trip mode for the highest score. Three minutes.

- Every competitor receives a certificate for participating, Bill Trinen says

- Kyle S and Emil P survive and move on to the next Underground

- Stage 2 bring us more Smash Wii U. Two groups of eight players will duke it out. The best six in each of those groups will continue. Six minute match, items on. Score Attack. Ranked based on total score

- Underground Stage 2 is Bird & Beans, the DSiWare game based on the WarioWare minigame. Three minutes to get the highest score. Rank based on the highest score achieved

- Emil P and YellowKillerBee carry on to the next Underground

- Stage 3 is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. 2 races: 50cc Mount Wario, 200cc Electrodrome. Points based on rank in each race.

- Results of stage 3: 1. Kyle W, 2. Thomas G, 3. Santiago A

- Underground Stage 3 is Donkey Kong Country Returns. A mine cart battle royale. 6 minutes to get to the end of Level 4-3. Rank based on fastest times

- 360Chrism and Dan S carry on to the next Underground

- In Stage 4, the players will have to deal with Splatoon 2's Tower Control mode. Best of three on the new Snapper Canal stage. All winning members of a team will move on

- The team of John Numbers, Jeff B, Cole G and Thomas G continues

- Now Underground Stage 4 brings Tetris (Game Boy version). Three minutes to reach the highest score. Top two will advance

- Dan S and Kyle W continue to the next Underground

- Stage 5 is ARMS. Arena matches. You need two wins to move to the next round. The first two to reach this feat will move on

- Trailer with new ARMS features going live after NWC 2017

- Cole G and John Numbers continue to the next round

- Underground Stage 5 is Mario Party 2. Three minigames, three matches each. Wins are worth two points, draws one. 

- Cole G, John Numbers and Thomas G participate in the finals

- Final Game 1 is Super Mario Maker. New course by the Nintendo Treehouse. First player to finish earns a spot in the Championship Game, the others go to another game

- John Numbers continues to the grand final

- Final Game 2 is Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. First player to win 5 courses will move on the final. If you fail along the way, it is an automatic win for the other person

- Thomas G continues to the Championship Final

- Cole G receives a Bronze Medal

- Championship Game is Super Mario Odyssey. Three challenges. First two challenges can grant additional seconds to sprint ahead

- Challenge 1: touch the Moon at the top of the tower

- Challenge 2: reach the Moon at the end

- in the first challenge, you will need to use switches to stop moving platforms in 2D environments. Quite puzzle based

- Thomas G wins first challenge

- Second challenge is in the Luncheon Kingdom. It has a lot of flicking the hat puzzles to move upwards

- John Numbers wins this challenge

- Challenge 3: complete the level and defeat the boss

- Icey underground level with a lot of puzzle segment, Bullet Bill capturing points

- In Deepest Underground, they fight a boss where they have capture its hands and land it directly in its face. Shown previously in the trailers

- Thomas G is the winner of Nintendo World Championships 2017 after a close battle
