Super Mario Odyssey director explains why New Donk City takes a realistic approach with its visuals

The following comes from a Game Informer interview with Director Kenta Motokura...

“I thought that we needed a scale that was easy to understand. Users will wonder how high Mario can jump and how far he can fall. We thought that it would be easier for users to understand and relate to the world in which they actually live. Mario is a strong enough character that he fits in just fine in a realistic environment.”

I always find Nintendo's thought process for their games to be fascinating. After all these years, they go with a realistic setting to better showcase Mario's abilities to players. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how many first-time Mario players will actually get the experience Nintendo envisioned.

Stock issues should be gone now. Hope you can get one

Have you been checking retailers? I've seen quite a few of them in Targets and Walmarts.

It's kinda funny... all those "official" sources claiming Mario was over five feet tall, and Odyssey makes it clear he really is closer to Sonic in terms of height. Actually feels right it you ask me.

Now if people could just accept that Samus really is 5'9"-ish and not the 6'-something as claimed by a dubiously canon American players guide. I fear they're just being fandumb because "it's Other M", even though Samus was shorter than Snake in Brawl (which came long before Other M), who himself is exactly 6 feet tall.

Is that Samus’ height without her suit? Because with her suit she always appeared taller to me - at least I imagine she’s closer to 7” all suited up.

You mean in the players guide? It's not specified... people just assume they mean without the suit.

And how does she appear so tall to you exactly? Without a proper reference to judge, she could be any height really... the closest we have that I'm aware is what I mentioned before; Snake in Brawl. Not the best thing to work with I know, but then, if Samus without her suit was over 6 feet tall, why is she noticeably shorter than a man who is canonically exactly 6 feet tall?

I’ve never really had a real reference. Just the character being a badass bounty hunter - I never imagined her being “short” ;) I’ve always seen her a tall strong Amazonian type.

She could be less than 6” without suit and more than 6” with the suit. The boots and helmet could easily add several inches.

In fairness, comparing characters in Smash Bros might not be the best either considering many characters in the game have fluctuated I’m size in other games, Bowser being the obvious example.

5'9" is still well within range of the tall strong Amazonian type if you ask me.

No doubt... the problem here is the people who insist she's over 6" without the suit because a players guide said so and complain that Other M "ruined her height" when her being under 6" without the suit appears to be the true canon.

Well, that's why I admitted it wasn't the best source to rely on, but also noted Snake is canonically 6" tall. I mean, that's set in stone info right there, and while Smash doesn't portray characters by their canon size, it is curious as to why they'd make him taller than Samus if she is in fact taller.

Am I the only one who thinks of that Simpsons Halloween episode when they see footage of Mario in New Donk City?

Would’ve rather had a Neo Bowser themed city

You know what they say... wish in one hand, poop in the other. See which one fills up first. 😆

A Neo Bowser City sandbox/level in a Mario game, is a cool idea though. Heck, they could even center the story around it.

I would have never thought that was the reason. Interesting..

I thought they were just modeling the city after 1933 King Kong. Huh.
