GN Version 5.0

The last update from Nintendo on the original Overcooked put the game at over 500k sold on Switch alone. There's no doubt the number has grown since then, and today, many over those fans are moving over to Overcooked 2. It's been quite the wild ride for Ghost Town Games. In an interview with GamesIndustry, the team shares some thoughts on seeing Nintendo feature the sequel in their Nintendo Direct for E3 2018.

Phil Duncan: "It was the result of months and months of conversations."

Oli DeVine: "These things don't get decided until close to release. So we thought this was probably not going to happen."

Phil Duncan: "It was nice that they were talking to us. It was very sweet. But we didn't believe... It came together very quickly in the end. We were in our hotel. We were all watching it together before we went to the Convention Center. So we all had our collective breaths held until Reggie did his bit. I felt a bit faint afterwards."

One of the big changes from the first to second Overcooked was the inclusion of online play. Phil Duncan explained why the decision was made.

"We've always said the best way to experience the game is playing it together in the same place, but we got so many messages from people... It wasn't something we had considered when making Overcooked 1, but some people just didn't have that opportunity [for local play]. We had emails from people saying that their brother is stationed overseas, or they have friend who has moved abroad and that they'd love to be able to play the game together. I think that changed our opinion a bit. We are still obviously big fans of local multiplayer games, but it feels wrong to rob people of that opportunity."
