Get ready for Nintendo Switch Online – important information regarding Nintendo Accounts

To prepare for the launch of the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online paid membership service, a Nintendo Switch system update* is planned. As part of this update, there are some changes to Nintendo Accounts that may require action on your behalf, particularly if you plan to purchase a Family Membership.

After installing the system update planned for September 19th, 2018, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user. Prior to this change, it is important to confirm that your Nintendo Account or your child’s Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user.

By ensuring that your Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user, you will be able to appropriately manage your save data, Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo eShop content.

How to check
You can review under each user’s My Page > User Settings > Link Nintendo Account. Part of the Nintendo Account holder’s email and nickname will display.
If you are not sure if the user is linked to the correct Nintendo Account, check the following:
On the Nintendo Account website, sign in and select the Shop menu option on the left. Compare your current balance and total My Nintendo Gold Points with those on the Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo Switch system.
If you are still not sure, compare the digital software on your Nintendo Switch with your Purchase History on the Shop menu or check to see if you have received purchase confirmation emails.
Unlinking your Nintendo Account
You will be able to unlink prior to September 19th, 2018. For instructions, click here.

Seems like a weird change. Wouldn't that make it a pain to load cloud saves if your Switch is stolen?

No, the opposite. Everything will be tied to your account now.
If you log in on another system you'll be able to download all your save data.

Ah, cool. So you wouldn't have to disconnect it from one to use on the other?

Not to use the save files. I'd imagine the digital software could still be restricted to only consoles where you're the primary user.. (don't know for sure if you can be the primary user on multiple consoles but that could be possible)..

You'd have to look up the general Switch FAQ for the details about digital games and accounts.

In any case, save data should be transferable. And, even when you're not the primary user, if the the game is available on the other console (for instance a friend who has the game as well) you should be able to load your save data on that system when you log in on that Switch with your account. That way you could continue a save file on another system, even if it's not yours. And your progress gets backed up in the cloud as well.

For example:

You have a 150h save file of Mario Kart with lots of unlocked vehicle parts on your Switch. You back it up in the cloud.

Next you are at a friends house but don't have your own Switch with you (for some reason xD). Luckily they do have the game on their Switch as well but they haven't made as much progress. So you log in on that Switch with your Nintendo Account and download the save file from the cloud backup so you and your friend can choose from all those unlocked vehicle parts.

After playing for a while you unlocked a number of new vehicle parts. So you activate Cloud backup (or whatever's necessary to save to the cloud).

When you arrive home you start up your Switch and download the updated game save from the cloud backup.
Now you can enjoy the stuff you unlocked on the other Switch together on your own Switch!

This is basically one of the scenarios you can do with the saves cloud backup..
