Former Telltale dev says some of the bugginess in their games was due to last-minute reworks, and not enough time to clean things up

Telltale narrative designer Emily Grace Buck gave a presentation at the Sweden Game Conference about her time with the company. Included in the conversation was talk of how Telltale got a lot of flack for their games being choppy and buggy. Buck says that while part of that was due to the game engine, a bigger part was due to time mismanagement and last-minute reworks.

"Telltale Games often got knocked for being very buggy and having a lot of frame skips. Yes, we had some of those, but a lot of the time what people thought were frame skips or buggy parts of our engine, were actually scenes that had gotten redone so last minute, that there was no time to smooth out the cinematography or the animation.... what you were seeing was not a product of a buggy engine, but buggy management system."

Obviously Telltale had a bit of mismanagement going on, which is why things ended up the way they did. To hear something like the tidbit above is sad, but not surprising. Check out more on the rough seas Telltale experienced in Buck's full presentation.
