Dragon Quest XI - PS4 Vs. Switch comparison screens

Time to check out some rough comparison screens between the PS4 and Switch versions of Dragon Quest XI. Keep in mind that the comparison screens for Switch are taken from the trailer we shared last night. In the groupings below, PS4 comes first, and then Switch below it.

Most people probably see that it is quite a difference, but a compromise they are willing to accept for the price of portability, and I don't blame them. The port still looks REALLY good, despite the obvious downgrade.

It looks very similar, some lighting differences and it looks like a slightly less complex shader but overall I am impressed.

The Switch version is a very noticeable downgrade from those screenshots. The differences are likely to be more glaring when we see gameplay.

Sometimes things actually look much better in motion, so we'll see. My main concern is whether performance and gameplay hold up. If so, then this seems like a pretty decent port, given that the PS4 version only supported 900p among other things.

Some of the shadows being cast seem to be either gone or at least a lower resolution. Given real time shadows can be a real performance hog in some cases I'm not surprised that's what's been most noticeably changed (I love real time shadows but they're pretty much always the main thing I need to turn down in PC games, because games with high detail shadowmaps seem to always eat away at performance more than textures and anti-aliasing, like in Overwatch my old GTX 660 can run the game at ultra textures, models, and effects, but shadows need to be set to medium to maintain a steady 60 FPS).

Not much difference. Nice work.

Not surprised that the lighting is slightly better on the PS4 version. But I AM surprised that that's about all I really noticed. Maybe my wait for the Switch version of the game hasn't been foolish. It looks pretty good and will be portable.

The difference is pretty irrelevant. The kind of difference you will only notice in a side-by-side comparison like this.

If some people can't see much difference, I suggest they get their eyes tested.

Oh wow, a company actually took time to downgrade the in game assets to maintain performance on a Switch port, this is what they should have done for Doom.
