VideoLan considering bringing VLC media player to Switch

A major media player could soon be making its way to Switch. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead developer of VideoLan, has revealed that his team is considering bringing their VLC media player to Switch. Bringing VLC to Switch would allow users to play all sorts of video files on the platform. For those who aren't familiar, here's a quick blurb on VLC itself.

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files, and various streaming protocols.

Since Switch doesn't have too many options when it comes to streaming video content, having something like VLC would be very welcome indeed.

It wouldn't just be for movies, it would be for anything. Family videos, photo albums, music, etc.. This would be the easiest way to get that sort of content up on the TV and still have it in a portable form factor. Let me tell you, just personally, it would amazing to get to carry work in progress footage and screenshots of my game with me at all times, running on the target platform, to be able to show to people and put it in their hands. That's one potential use for it right there.

This would be amazing. I take my Switch on long bus trips all the time and sometimes I just don't feel like playing a game, I would love to have the option to watch movies or shows I've downloaded. Not to mention music, which would 100% require a "listen on background" function to be viable.

I'd prefer to do all this legally, as in, having Netflix and Spotify with their "download locally" features, but seeing as that's not an option... I'll take VLC any day!

I'll believe it when I see it

Maybe I'm not seeing it but, what's the point? People steam more nowadays than having their video files of movies and the like. If anything people who buy physical are the only ones who have their movies on hand.

This would be good to have, as it is, the Switch is a very basic handheld.

I don't think I would get much use out of it, but it would be pretty cool to have.
Can we get MS Paint on Switch too now?
