Teacher fired after offering to play Fortnite with students

Brett Belsky has been let go from his teaching job at MS 890. The reasoning for his firing all boils down to Fortnite.

Belsky was trying to reach out to two students in particular who were struggling a bit in school. He overheard the students talking about Fortnite, and offered to play some of the game with them if they managed to get their work done.

"As a teacher, you reach out the best you can. These kids talk about video games. I said, 'If you can get this work done, maybe I'll play against you.'"

The students took Belsky up on his offer, and he stayed true to his word. He played about 20 minutes of Fortnite with the two, but only after they he told them to get permission from their parents. It appears that one of the boys didn't tell both parents, or never told the parents at all though. When one father heard that a teacher played Fortnite with his son, he reported it to the principal, and the teacher was eventually let go.

Belsky now says he should have discussed the idea with some of the higher-ups at school before making the deal, but still, it doesn't seem like this should be a fierable offense.
