GN Version 5.0

Square-Enix has shared a bunch of details related to Octopath Traveler today. First up, let's talk about the Switch title. Square-Enix has confirmed that Octopath Traveler is now at 1.5 million sold worldwide! Last we heard, the game was just over 1 million sold, so it's great to see the game still moving units.

Second, Square-Enix shared a message for those who are looking for more information on a console game from the Octopath Traveler team.

“Everyone who waits for a new console game, sorry, we will need more time for developing.”

Why did Square-Enix specify 'console' game in their message? That has to do with today's announcement of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a mobile game in the Octopath Traveler series. This is a “free-to-play single-player RPG” set in the world of Orsterra, and it takes place several years before the events of Octopath Traveler. Pre-registration for those in Japan is already open, and fans can even sign up starting March 12th, 2019 to gain access to an early demo. Here's a round-up of official details Square-Enix has shared on the game.

HD-2D for smartphones – 3D CG screen effects added to pixelized graphics create a magical world on smartphones.
Eight-character party command-based battles – Form a party of up to eight characters to fight in evolved command-based battles. Smooth gameplay with swipe controls.

Choice of story between three reigning champions – The setting is the Orsterra continent. The protagonist is a “Chosen One” who will fight against a great evil that has achieved fortune, power, and fame.

Field commands – Take various actions towards characters on the field. Try out all sorts of things, such as “Listen” for information, “Steal” an item, “Hire” an ally, and more.
