Cuphead co-creator wants Cuphead and Mugman in Smash Bros. Ultimate, is 'more than pleased' to make that happen

A brawl is surely brewing!

Cuphead is coming to Switch. There was a time when saying Cuphead could come to Switch seemed like a fever dream of diehard fans at best, or the rumors of evil trolls at worst. Despite all that, Cuphead on Switch is indeed a reality. So what's next for the dynamic duo? If co-creator Jared Moldenhauer has his way, Cuphead and Mugman will get their day in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

"I’ve dreamed of Smash Bros," said Moldenhauer. "[Cuphead and Mugman] belong in there. So basically if fans want it, I couldn’t see how Nintendo wouldn’t want the fans to get what they wanted. I think they would because they support their fans a lot . . . So if Nintendo was keeping their fans happy, then I’d be more than pleased to make that the easiest transition. Just a piece of paper, we don’t need anything. You can have those characters make an appearance."

No thank you. I already find it borderline insulting that people think Master Chief or Crash should be in SSB despite it being a main focus on Nintendo/their closeknit third parties, and while I don't mind the cameos from Shantae/SK (they made themselves well known enough in Japan, I feel. Wouldn't mind a Cave story rep either) I don't think Cuphead is nearly old/iconic enough to be worth a SSB spot. I don't even think the game's out in Japan yet. (though it seems like it will be soon over there)

I'm a bit wary of his comments, he's assuming a lot from Nintendo.

Nintendo is a very reserved company and I'm sure comments like this from devs are things they would have wanted to avoid. I remember at the time MvC3 came out, someone big at Capcom said in an interview that he wanted to do a Nintendo x Capcom, he later had to apologize to the executives at Nintendo for stirring up unwanted concepts to the public.

Well, we now have indies in Smash with Shovel Knight and Shantae. The precedent exists at least.

Very unlikely. Fighters have been decided long ago. Even Sakurai said Arms' fighters couldn't be in because they came late in development.

Assist trophy would be fine. Not worthy enough to be a fighter though.

I have spoken.

*sigh* ...there are stronger and more Nintendo-centric 3rd party characters who haven't gotten into Smash yet... is it too much to ask to focus on them first? I blame Cloud and Joker and such... after they got in suddenly any third party character with the tiniest relevance to Nintendo were totally valid suggestions...

If done correctly, I think Cuphead could be a standout and unique fighter in Smash. I say bring him in If there is going to be a "season 2." At the very least, a Cuphead stage could be fun and beautiful.

When are you even going to hear a developer saying "No. He/she is not allowed in Smash Bros."?

But if you ask me, I do not approve. It's not about whether or not fans want it, it's about how would this help Nintendo and the product financially

Cuphead's appeal is in his 2D animated approach which would be... hard to represent in a 3D fighter unless they did him like Game & Watch which would just be a little... weird.

His statement here is also a little...manipulative? "Does Nintendo not want to please their fans? I think they'd want to please their fans, do their fans want this?? Nintendo come on now..."
