AI: The Somnium Files' director says the game will have 'cute and sexy scenes for the boys'

Okay...

Al: The Somnium Files director Kotaro Uchikoshi did numerous interviews for the game at GDC 2019. We've covered some of his discussion so far, but today we have a blurb that's likely not going to sit right with some people. Uchikoshi wanted to deliver a message to fans of his previous work to get them excited about Al: The Somnium Files, which lead to the following statement.

“For the adventure game fans, I can guarantee that you’ll have a great time with this game, and for the boys out there, there are some cute and sexy scenes that you can be happy about.”

I have a feeling this is a statement that will haunt Uchikoshi a bit moving forward.

Can't wait to hear about how this is somehow horrible and he shouldn't make the games he wants to make because of some reason or another.

If what he said is a problem for you, don't buy the game. Instead, people will scream at Nintendo, Playstation or whoever else to get the game censored or de-platformed. It's coming.

Totally agree. If you don't like this kinda stuff, don't get the game. Or just close your eyes or something.

Finally! Something for the boys!

Oh, no! A creator wants to make a game that appeals to his target demographic!

STOP THIS SEXIST!

I'm not familiar with all the interviews that Uchikoshi has given for his other games, but male-targeted sexy bits and innuendo were in all the Zero Escape games to varying degrees.

I'm curious to know if this statement is more of a "don't worry that stuff's still there" or a "look forward to more than we've had in the past".

There's absolutely nothing wrong with sexual content. Lots of people like it, that's normal, there are people who don't, which is also fine. There are whole games based around it, and that's cool. However, doing it in such a heteronormal and male-centric way is unnecessary. There's no harm or difficulty in including that type of content for all people, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. All they need to do is handle some male characters the same way they handle some female characters.

Agreed. I prefer games like Mass Effect where your character has a plethora of characters to pick from and has a greater respect for those characters. But I don't think these games have gay guys or women in mind when they are made ;)

I just think the issue I have is that these games that have "cute and sexy scenes for the boys" tend to border on violent sexual content. Where your character makes multiple unwanted advances on a meek and uncomfortable female character until they "fall in love" with you and let you pop their cherry. It just sends all the wrong messages, and reminds me of stuff like Fire Emblem where if you were male and into the lesbian character you could force her to take a potion to make her straight. Which was completely insensitive considering it made light of the horrible history of gay conversion therapy. And then people were upset that it was censored for Western release.

So yeah, I'm okay with this stuff as long as it is respectful and doesn't cross the line into saying sexual harassment and abuse is a-okay and normal. Because it's really not.

Live playing games only to have a weird cheesecake moment appear and throw me off. Especially in a murderer mystery game.
